Little Jack Ika-Day-Night 30mm 2.3g Squid Lure
The Ika-Day-Night is a 30 mm sinking lure shaped as a small squid rather than a baitfish, aimed squarely at light game. Squid are a staple food for inshore predators almost everywhere, yet very few lures small enough for ultralight tackle carry that silhouette. The body is built on a wire-through triple structure with a low centre of gravity, so it casts well for its weight and holds a stable, level posture on the drop instead of rolling over. Twelve colours run from natural smoke and clear-brown squid tones through holographic finishes to glow and keimura (ultraviolet-reactive) patterns, which is where the name comes from: natural and holographic tones for clear daylight, glow and keimura for dusk, night and lit harbour water.
Key Features
- Compact squid profile at 30 mm and 2.3 g, sized for ultralight and light game tackle
- Wire-through triple body construction for strength
- Low centre of gravity gives a stable sinking posture without rolling
- Twelve colours spanning natural, holographic, glow and keimura ultraviolet finishes
- Suits lift-and-fall, stop-and-go and slow straight retrieves
How To Fish It
- Lift and fall — Let it sink to the bottom, lift the rod tip smoothly to about 10 o'clock, then follow it down on a semi-slack line. Most takes register as a jump or a stall in the line on the fall.
- Stop and go — Wind three or four slow turns, then stop for two seconds. The pause lets the lure settle level, which is when following fish commit.
- Slow retrieve along the shadow line — Under harbour and jetty lights, keep it just outside the lit water and retrieve slowly. Use glow or keimura colours and recharge glow finishes with a torch.
- Bottom drift in current — Cast up-current, let it sink and drift naturally along the bottom with only enough retrieve to stay in contact.
Target Species By Region
- Southeast Asia — Small trevally, queenfish and needlefish off breakwaters and jetties, mangrove jack and small grouper around rock walls, and squid taken from lit piers at night.
- North America — Speckled trout, small striped bass, black sea bass and porgy around inshore structure and pier pilings.
- Japan & East Asia — A light game lure for horse mackerel (aji) and rockfish (mebaru, kasago) on ajing and mebaring tackle, and for small squid around harbours at night.
- Australia, Middle East & Europe — Whiting, flathead and bream in Australian estuaries; small queenfish on Gulf flats; wrasse, bass and squid off European harbour walls.
