Hinotsu R-Type Round Heavy Duty Split Ring 6343

The Hinotsu 6343 is the heavy-duty end of the split ring range. Where a standard split ring is a flat coil sized for lure hardware, the R-type uses a reinforced round-section double coil — thicker wire and a profile built to resist the two things that actually destroy split rings offshore: springing open under a sustained load and slowly stretching into an oval until the jig falls off. Made from specially selected stainless steel and forged for high tensile strength, it is corrosion resistant for repeated saltwater sessions. Supplied 11 pieces per bag.

A split ring is the part of the rig meant to be changed. It opens with pliers, so it is how you swap jigs, hooks and assists on the water — but it is coiled wire with a seam, and it will always be weaker than a solid ring of the same size. That is why the standard chain reads PE braid main line → FG knot → leader → solid ring → split ring → jig: the seamless solid ring carries the knot and assist cords, and the split ring, the consumable, carries only the lure. The R-type exists for when even the consumable has to hold.

How To Rig It

• Heavy duty versus standard — when to upgrade — Standard duty is fine for reef fish at moderate drag and casting metals from shore. Step up to the R-type when locking the drag on giant trevally, amberjack, kingfish or big grouper, on deep wrecks where a fish must be stopped before it reaches structure, and whenever you are pulling heavy jigs on PE 4 and above.
• Always use split ring pliers — Open the coil with the pliers' hooked tip, walk the solid ring or jig eye in, then slide it fully around before releasing. Heavy-gauge rings cannot be opened by hand without distorting them.
• Only the jig hangs on it — Assist cords and leader knots belong on the solid ring. Line worked into a split ring's seam is the usual cause of a "the ring failed" story.
• Inspect the coil after every fish — Sight down the ring: if the coil ends no longer sit flush, or the ring has gone from round to oval, it is stretched and must be replaced.
• Replace the terminal set — Rinse in fresh water after each trip; change rings once salt crusting or rust bloom appears, or after any long fight, together with the solid ring and assist cords.
