Hayabusa Treble Hooks Ken Claw Strong FF602 — Made In Japan

Hayabusa list the FF602 as the Treble Ken Claw Strong, a thick-wire treble in their black bass series produced under the direction of Japanese professional Ken Iyobe, for confrontations with big fish and forceful fighting. It is not a like-for-like replacement treble but an upgrade hook, for when the trebles a lure came with have been straightened, or when a fishery holds fish heavier than the plug was designed around. The wire is noticeably thicker than a standard treble, the eye is positioned so the hook hangs balanced rather than cocked to one side, and the points are long and tapered so a single point making contact still drives deep. They turn very slightly inward, trading a little of the instant bite of a straight point for holding power once the fish is on and shaking. A low-friction fluorine coating sits over a black nickel finish. Four sizes, #8 to #4, six hooks per pack.

How To Rig It

• Upgrading a hard lure — Open the split ring with pliers, slide the old treble off and the new one on. Change all the hooks on the lure at once, and check the split rings while you are there — after a hook upgrade the ring is usually the next thing to fail.
• Watch the buoyancy — Thicker wire is heavier wire, and on a floating crankbait or suspending jerkbait it can slow the rise or turn a suspender into a slow sinker. Test it in the margin first and drop a size if the action has changed.
• Choosing the size — Treble sizes run the Western way here, so #8 is the smallest and #4 the largest. Match what you removed unless the action allows a size up, and reel down to remove slack before sweeping the rod through — thick wire needs pressure to bury. The belly and tail trebles should never be able to reach each other.

• Southeast Asia — Rehooking minnows, poppers and swimbaits for giant snakehead (toman), peacock bass and hampala barb (sebarau) inland; barramundi (siakap), queenfish (talang) and trevally around jetties, river mouths and rock walls.
• North America — Largemouth and smallmouth bass on crankbaits, jerkbaits, topwater and glide baits; pike and musky on plugs, and inshore striped bass and redfish.
• Japan & East Asia — Black bass on hard baits, the fishery this hook was built for, plus seabass (suzuki) on minnows and vibrations where fish run heavier than the lure's factory hooks allow.

FF602 or TBL930? Two different jobs. The EB930 TBL930 is Hayabusa's standard-gauge treble, round bend and straight points, in nickel or black nickel — a like-for-like swap that leaves a lure running as it did out of the box. The FF602 is the heavy-wire alternative. Fit the TBL930 to keep a lure honest; fit the FF602 when strength is the priority and you can live with the extra weight.

Recommended Pairing

• #8 and #6 for small to mid-size crankbaits and jerkbaits, 10–16 lb class
• #5 and #4 for larger cranks, poppers, pencils and swimbaits, 16–30 lb class or PE 1.5–3 with a leader
• Split rings rated at or above your line class, replaced at the same time as the hooks
• Rinse and dry after salt water; add a short wire trace for tenggiri and barracuda
