Pull comes off the knot, runs the length of the shank and exits through the tip on the same axis, so nothing twists as the hook goes in; on a still bottom rig, where the fish loads the trace in one direction, that turns pressure into penetration instead of leverage. The long shank is the other half of it: a worm, squid strip or slice of cut fish threads along the wire and hangs straight instead of bunching around the bend, and there is steel above the bait to take pliers in a mouth you would rather not reach into.

How To Rig It

• Threaded strip bait — Lay a fillet or squid strip along the shank and pass the point through twice so it sits flat. A straight bait on an inline hook stops the trace spinning on a drift.
• Snelled paternoster — One or two short droppers above the sinker for jetty, breakwater and boat bottom work. Snelling the ringed eye holds the hook square to the trace.
• Running sinker on sand and mud — Sinker sliding to a swivel, then 60–100 cm of fluorocarbon. Wind down until you feel weight, then lift; do not strike.
• Live prawn — Pin a prawn through the last tail segment on #1–#2/0 and fish it free-lined or under a float along pilings and river mouths.
