This is a heavy-branch sabiki — a ready-tied Japanese bait rig with five dressed hooks on a single main line. In Japanese rig language harisu is the branch line that carries each hook and mikiito is the main line they hang from, and the whole point of this series is that both are built noticeably thicker than a standard bait sabiki. Hayabusa builds it for what they call kuwase sabiki: you catch small horse mackerel, sardines or whitebait on the skins, then leave them struggling on the rig and wait for something bigger to eat one. On a normal light sabiki that second bite parts the branch line. On this one it holds. Three dressings cover different light and water conditions, and all three run five hooks over a 1.5 m rig in three hook sizes.

How To Fish It

• Standard drop — Sinker on the bottom loop, drop to the seabed, wind up two or three turns and hold. Small shakes of the rod tip make the skins flare; long sweeps only tangle the branches.
• With a chum basket — Fit an amikago basket above or below the rig and load it with ground shrimp or bread. Jerk once on arrival to release a cloud, then sit still inside it.
• Fishing the kuwase bite — Once a small fish is on, do not wind straight up. Let it swim on a semi-tight line at the depth it was hooked and give the predator time to commit before lifting into it.
• Working the water column — If nothing takes on the bottom, re-drop and stop the rig at different counts. Bait schools stack at a level and stay there.
• Night under lights — Charge the glow skins on the HS415 and HS416, fish the shadow line at the edge of a jetty light, and re-charge every twenty minutes or so.

Target Species By Region

• Southeast Asia — Selar and small kembung (Indian mackerel) from jetties and breakwaters, plus tamban and selayang; the thicker harisu earns its place when a small queenfish, tenggiri or barramundi (siakap) takes a hooked bait.
• North America — Pacific mackerel, sardine and smelt off piers and jetties for bait, with the larger sizes taking barred surfperch and small rockfish and holding a passing calico bass or halibut.
• Japan & East Asia — The home use: aji and iwashi on the skins from a breakwater, held on the rig for the aomono (yellowtail and mackerel family) and hirame that follow the bait schools inshore.
• Australia, Middle East & Europe — Yellowtail scad, slimy mackerel and garfish from Australian wharves; sardine and picarel in the Mediterranean; small queenfish and sardine on Gulf breakwaters.

Recommended Pairing

• 2.7–4.5 m sabiki or light bait rod with a soft tip, matched to a 2000–3000 size spinning reel
• 10–20 lb main line for the #5-4, stepping to 20–30 lb for the #7-5 where bigger fish are expected on the drop
• 15–40 g bank or bomb sinker on the bottom loop, heavier in tidal flow off a breakwater end
• Add a chum basket for schooling bait, and keep a landing net ready — lifting a double hook-up on the rig alone is how branch lines break
