Hayabusa ET14371 Iseama X-Strong Hook Pack — Made In Japan

Iseama (イセアマ) is one of the oldest general-purpose hook shapes in Japan and the ancestor of the pattern Chinese anglers call yisheni: a round, fairly deep bend with the point angled slightly inward, so once the hook is in, load stays on the bend rather than levering the point out — which is why iseama hooks hold fish that jump and roll. Hayabusa list this one as Iseama X-Strong Ringed BN, product number ET14371.

X-Strong is a wire-gauge grade, not a marketing word. A standard iseama is built for the bite; an X-Strong is built for the fight. Reinforced, heavier-diameter wire answers a specific failure — the hook that penetrated perfectly and then opened out under drag, straightened when a fish wrapped a piling, or came back distorted. Thicker wire raises the load the bend takes before it deforms, and the forged flattened section stiffens it where an iseama bend wants to spring. The trade is worth knowing: heavy gauge needs more force to bury, so it belongs on tackle that can drive it home rather than on a soft finesse outfit.

The point is straight, not offset, sending hook-setting force down one axis instead of into a twist — the right choice on a still bottom rig. The ringed eye takes mono, fluorocarbon or braid direct, and a crimped wire trace where a flatted eye would not.

How To Rig It

• Heavy bottom rig — Running sinker above a swivel, 50–100 cm leader, baited with prawn, squid, shellfish or cut fish. Wind down and lift hard enough to bury heavy wire; a soft lift is the usual reason an X-Strong hook fails to stick.
• Snelled paternoster over structure — Short droppers above the sinker for reef edges, wrecks and pilings, where heavy gauge lets you lean on a fish and turn it out of cover.
• Float and shore rig — Sliding float and a short trace along rock ledges and breakwaters; let the incurved point set on a moving line.
• Live bait — Nose- or collar-hook a prawn or baitfish so the bend stays clear, then fish it slow-sinking beside cover on a firm drag.

Specifications

Sizes follow the Japanese gō (号) system: the number rises as the hook gets larger, the reverse of Western numbering. #9 is the smallest here, #14 the largest. Because this is an X-Strong grade, the wire on any given number is heavier than a standard iseama of the same size — compare by eye, not by number alone.

Choosing within the family. Take the ET14371 when the fish are heavy, the ground is rough, or you fish 30 lb and up and want the hook to be the last thing that gives. For long baits in sea bass and surf work the ET17671 Maruseigo gives the same round-bend behaviour on a longer shank; for cautious bream on light line the compact ET0187 Chinu sets more easily than heavy wire will.

• Medium to heavy bait rod, 4–10 kg class, with backbone enough to drive heavy-gauge wire on the lift
• 3000–6000 spinning or a small overhead reel, 30–60 lb braid or mono
