Hayabusa ET0187 Chinu Ringed Hook Pack — Made In Japan

Chinu (チヌ, 黒鯛) is the Japanese black sea bream, and the chinu hook was cut for the way that fish eats: it inspects a bait with a small hard mouth, mouths it, drops it, then takes it properly. A long shank is wasted on that bite. What works is a compact hook — short shank, wide hooking gap, point turned slightly in toward the shank — so it disappears inside a prawn or crab and finds the corner of the jaw when the fish turns. Hayabusa build it as Chinu Ringed Black Nickel, product number ET01871: forged through the bend, offset point, ringed eye, black nickel plating. Hayabusa note that the shape is not limited to bream: matched to the right bait size it becomes a general-purpose hook, which is how it is used across Asia. How To Rig It

• Live prawn under a sliding float — Thread the prawn from the tail so the point exits near the head and the gap stays clear. Set the float so the bait rides just off the bottom and let the tide walk it along a breakwater face.
• Crab and shellfish on a light bottom rig — Running sinker to a swivel, 60–100 cm of fluorocarbon. Hook a crab through the leg socket so it stays alive.
• Do not strike — A bream mouths first. Let the line move away, wind down until the rod loads, then lift steadily; the incurved point sets on pressure, not on a snap.
• Wire trace — Crimp or twist a short single-strand wire to the ring eye for cutlassfish and other toothy species — a job a flatted eye handles badly.

Target Species By Region

• Southeast Asia — A staple jetty and rock-wall hook: barramundi (siakap) and mangrove jack on live prawn, croaker (gelama), javelin grunter (kaci), small grouper (kerapu) and snapper (merah) around pilings, plus cutlassfish on a wire trace.
• North America — Sheepshead, black drum, porgy and tautog on crab and shrimp baits around bridges, jetties and piling fields.
• Japan & East Asia — The home fishery: chinu otoshikomi (チヌ落とし込み), dropping crab or mussel down the face of a harbour wall to kurodai and kibire, plus bukkomi (ブッコミ) bottom baits and tachiuo on wire.
• Australia, Middle East & Europe — Bream, whiting and luderick in Australian estuaries; safi in the Gulf; gilthead bream and wrasse on Mediterranean and Atlantic rock marks.

Specifications

Sizes follow the Japanese gō (号) system: the number rises as the hook gets larger, the reverse of Western numbering. #1 is the smallest here, #12 the largest. Ranges are not comparable between brands — match by eye against your bait, not by number.

Choosing a size. #1–#4 for sandworm, prawn tails and pond work; #5–#8 is the everyday bream, croaker and jetty band; #10–#12 for whole live prawn, crab and the larger inshore fish. If the bait is long rather than round — a strip or a full worm — the ET17671 Maruseigo long shank suits it better than this compact bend.
