Decoy SV-62 Salt Special Heavy Jig Head — Made In Japan

The SV-62 Salt Special Heavy is the big-water half of Decoy's Salt Special pair. Where the SV-61 covers #1 to #2/0 and 5–9 g, the SV-62 starts at #3/0 and runs to #5/0, with head weights from 1/4 oz to 1 oz in the full factory range. Katsuichi specify a stronger hook for large-bodied bottom fish and flatfish, and the head is intended for both shore and offshore work — seabass and mahi-mahi in open water, ainame and bekko-zoi on rock, magochi (bartail flathead) and hirame over sand. Finish is W Nickel. This store carries six of the factory combinations, from #3/0 at 7 g to #5/0 at 21 g.

The difference between a saltwater head and a freshwater one shows up most clearly here. The plating is chosen to survive salt rather than to look bright, the hook is materially heavier in the wire than a bass head of the same gape so it holds shape when a fish is turned away from structure on locked drag, and the shank lock keeps a large soft plastic seated after repeated long casts into current.

How To Rig It

• SV-61 or SV-62 — Take the SV-61 for shallow, sheltered water and 3–5 inch plastics on light tackle. Move to the SV-62 once you are past roughly 5 m, fishing a running tide, casting into wind, or using a bait big enough that a #2/0 hook sits buried in the body.
• Pick hook size first, then weight — Match the hook to the bait's bulk: #3/0 for 4–5 inch plastics, #4/0 to #5/0 for 6 inch and larger. Then choose the weight that holds bottom: 7 g inshore and in slack water, 10.5–14 g in moderate current or 5–15 m, 21 g in strong flow, deep drops or a headwind.
• Vertical work from a boat — Drop to the bottom, lift a metre, and let it fall back on a controlled line. Re-contact bottom every few lifts as the boat drifts; most bites on flatfish and rockfish register as weight on the drop.
• Sand and flatfish — Drag the head along the bottom with the rod low, kicking up sand, then pause. Hirame and magochi ambush from the substrate and hit the pause.
• Setting the hook — With a heavy-wire hook on a big gape, sweep the rod rather than snapping the wrist, and keep winding through the set.

• Southeast Asia — Barramundi (siakap), mangrove jack, coral trout and grouper (kerapu) on reef edges, plus queenfish and golden trevally over offshore structure.
• North America — Redfish, black drum and large flounder inshore; striped bass in tidal rivers; lingcod, cabezon and large rockfish on Pacific reefs.
• Japan & East Asia — The intended fishery: seabass (suzuki), shiira (mahi-mahi), ainame and bekko-zoi on rock, and hirame and magochi over sand on soft-plastic salt tackle.
