Decoy SV-30 Chinu Head Jig Head — Made In Japan

The SV-30 Chinu Head is built around one fact anglers underestimate: a chinu — black sea bream, kurodai — bites hard enough to flatten an ordinary jig head. These fish live on barnacles, mussels, pipe worms, crabs and shrimp scraped off harbour walls and rip-rap, and the jaws that do that work will crush a standard rockfish head at the moment of the take. Katsuichi's answer was a head built for bay chinu: strong enough not to be crushed, with a sharp, precisely formed hook that penetrates a hard jaw and a bend shaped to slide out to the lips, where the hold is most secure. The head is round and high-balance, tuned for the falling posture this style depends on, and it takes anything from small tubes and grubs to real mussel (igai). Katsuichi's guidance on size is simple: #2 for boat fishing, #4 from the shore.

SV-30 Or SV-30W

  • Same head, same hook. The SV-30W is the white-painted version. Shape, balance and hook pattern are identical, so the choice is about what you thread onto it.
  • Choose the SV-30 as the general-purpose head for tubes, grubs, craws and natural bait, where the head is simply a sinker and a hook. It also carries the lighter shore sizes: in Katsuichi's range the #4 goes down to 0.9 g, which the white version does not offer.
  • Choose the SV-30W for pale barnacle and pipe-worm imitations, where the rig should read as one object rather than a dark lump on the nose of a light bait — clear, shallow water, close range, fish that inspect before eating.
  • Stocked here — SV-30 in #2 and #4, both 1.8 g; SV-30W in #2 at 1.8 g, 2.5 g and 3.5 g.

Key Features

  • Crush-resistant construction specified for the jaw strength of chinu
  • Strong, sharp hook that penetrates a hard jaw cleanly
  • Hook shape designed to slide out to the lips for a secure hold
  • High-balance design tuned for falling performance
  • Round head compatible with tubes, grubs and other soft baits, and with natural bait
  • NS Black hook finish; five heads per pack

How To Rig It

  • Falling with a small tube — Thread a short tube or crustacean bait square against the head, then let it fall on a controlled line beside the structure. Takes come on the drop, so watch the line, not the rod tip.
  • Vertical down the wall — Drop straight down the face of a harbour wall, pier leg or rip-rap. Chinu graze hard against structure and most fish are within a metre of it.
  • Lift, drop and hold — Lift the head clear of the bottom, let it settle, then hold still for several seconds. The pause is what pulls a grazing fish across.
  • Sweep, do not snap — A chinu bite is a series of taps before solid weight. Wait for the weight, then sweep steadily and let the hook find the lip.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Small grouper (kerapu), rock cod and mangrove jack along breakwaters and pilings; estuary bream around oyster-crusted jetty legs.
  • North America — Sheepshead, black drum and porgy over barnacled pilings and bridge structure, plus Pacific rockfish and calico bass on the same crustacean baits.
  • Japan & East Asia — The home fishery: chinu (kurodai) on harbour walls, breakwaters and rip-rap, #2 from the boat and #4 from the shore, plus kasago and mebaru on the same ground.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Yellowfin bream around oyster racks and rock walls; gilthead bream in Mediterranean and Atlantic harbours; wrasse over European rock marks.
