Decoy Single31OP Tracin' Single Open Hook — Made In Japan

The Single31OP is the Tracin' Single with an open eye. Everything else is the hook already in the range: the same sproat-style bend and long shank for lures you trace through the water — spoons, spinners, minnows and small metals — the same long taper into a straight point, the same micro barb, the same NS Black finish for wire hardness. What changes is how it attaches, and that one change alters both the job it does and the way you look after it.

A closed-eye single needs a split ring. The Single31OP does not: the eye is wide and left open, so it goes straight onto the lure's own eye or onto an existing ring without split-ring pliers and without dismantling anything. On a minnow that removes a link from the chain and the hook sits tighter under the body — the cleaner, more streamlined setup Katsuichi point it at. It also means you can change hooks on the water, in wind, in the time it takes to twist one on.

The cost is that an open eye is only as secure as you leave it. Pinch it closed after fitting and check it after a hard fight or a snag: an eye sprung open under load can let the hook walk off. Mounting direct also removes the free swing a split ring gives, which changes how the hook hangs — usually welcome on a minnow, less so on a wide-wobbling spoon. For heavy work the closed-eye Single31 Tracin' on a split ring stays the more secure fitting. Against a treble, either single gives up some initial contact and gains holding power after the hook-up, plus far less fouling on weed, net and bottom.

Key Features

  • Wide open eye — fits directly to a lure eye or split ring, no pliers needed
  • Long taper and straight point for sharp, smooth penetration
  • Micro barb: holding power without extra resistance going in
  • NS Black finish for wire hardness and durability
  • Streamlined fit that suits minnowing in particular
  • Suits native trout, bass and saltwater lures alike
  • Three sizes stocked, #2, #6 and #8, ten hooks per pack

How To Rig It

  • Straight to the lure eye — Twist the open eye onto the belly or tail eye, seat it, then squeeze it closed so there is no gap. Point riding upward in the tail position.
  • Minnowing — Cast, wind down to depth, then twitch and pause. The direct mount keeps the hook tight to the body so it darts with the lure rather than trailing behind it.
  • Fast swaps — Carry #6 and #8 to downsize on a slow day and #2 for the bigger baits, and change without opening a single split ring.
  • Check it after every fish — Run a thumbnail over the eye gap. Re-close it if it has opened, and retire any hook whose eye no longer springs shut.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Hampala barb (sebarau) and small peacock bass on minnows and spinners in reservoirs, juvenile trevally, queenfish (talang) and small barracuda on micro metals off jetties, and tilapia on catch-and-release ponds.
  • North America — Trout and steelhead on spoons and spinners, smallmouth bass and walleye on small jerkbaits, and single-hook-only waters where regulations require the conversion.
  • Japan & East Asia — Native trout (yamame, iwana) and managed-pond trout on minnows and spoons, plus light shore work for mackerel and rockfish.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Bream and Australian bass on small hardbaits; perch, pike and zander on spinners and spoons in European lakes and canals.

Model Single31OP Tracin' Single OP. Made in Japan by Katsuichi (Decoy).

Recommended Pairing

  • Light spinning tackle, roughly 3–20 g lure rating, with a 1000–2500 size reel
  • PE 0.4–1.0 braid to an 8–16 lb fluorocarbon leader, or 6–12 lb straight nylon
  • Split-ring pliers are still worth carrying — use them to close the eye, not to open a ring
  • Keep the closed-eye Single31 for heavier work, and add a short wire trace where barracuda are present
