Decoy DJ-100 Grand Pike Hook — Made In Japan

"Pike" is the name of a hook shape in Decoy's range, not a species. The DJ-100 Grand Pike is the heavy end of that family: a single-type assist rig built not on the standard Pike AS-03 but on the Pike Type-R, the power version of the same shape. The Type-R keeps the AS-03 geometry that made the pattern a standard in light jigging — fast penetration, wide gape, holding power — but raises the wire diameter, adds a reinforced flat-pressed bend, and uses a calculated up-eye angle so the assist line pulls the point into the fish. The result is one single assist that holds up across the whole range of jigging styles, from hard fast jerks to slow pitch.

The assist line is specified by size. Sizes #1 to #3/0, aimed at inshore jigging, use a braided assist line. From #4/0 up — deep water, big fish, and the situations where holding the jig itself becomes the problem — Katsuichi switch to a four-strand braid with added stiffness. Every size runs a GP ring. Tin finish with Aqua Block treatment.

Against the rest of the Pike range: the DJ-88 Twin Pike is the light twin for general light jigging, the DJ-79 Long Pike is the long single for long jigs and slow work, and the DJ-89 Tachi Pike puts Pike hooks on stainless wire for cutlassfish. The DJ-100 is the one to fit when the tackle steps up.

How To Rig It

• Front assist — Split-ring the GP ring to the jig's nose eye. A single front assist is the standard power jigging setting and tangles far less than a twin on a fast drop.
• Fast jerking — Work the jig with sharp one-pitch strokes; the heavier Type-R wire will not open under the load a fast retrieve puts on a hooked amberjack.
• Slow pitch — Lift and let the jig fall on a controlled line; the up-eye keeps the hook riding point-up and turning in as soon as the line loads.
• Match size to water — #1 and #1/0 for inshore jigs; #2/0 as the all-round size; #4/0 and #5/0 for deep water and larger fish, where the stiffer assist keeps the hook clear of the jig.

• Southeast Asia — Amberjack, giant trevally (gerepoh), dogtooth tuna and large grouper (kerapu) over deep reef and offshore pinnacles.
• North America — Amberjack, yellowtail, grouper and lingcod on vertical jigs; tuna on the heavier sizes.
• Japan & East Asia — The home use: offshore jigging and slow pitch for buri, hiramasa and kanpachi, plus kue on deeper marks.
• Australia, Middle East & Europe — Samson fish and kingfish off Australia; cobia in the Gulf; bluefin tuna and pollack on Atlantic jigging trips.
