Decoy AH-9 Area Hook Type IX "Floria" — Made In Japan

Area trout is the Japanese managed-pond game: small stocked still waters, 1–3 g spoons, 2–4 lb line or fine PE, almost every fish released. Single hooks are the rule there, and they need to be fine, sharp and barbless or micro-barbed. Decoy's Area Hook series is Katsuichi's range for it, and most patterns in the series commit to one job. The AH-9 Floria is the one that does not.

It was developed around one idea: a hook that works the same set at the front of the spoon for vertical fishing or at the rear for the retrieve. Those settings normally want different hooks — vertical fishing brings bites from several angles as the spoon falls, a wound spoon brings following fish that take from behind. The Floria covers both, so you change style mid-session without changing hooks.

The surface treatment is the headline: Silky F Coat, a fluorine-based plating with a low friction coefficient that penetrates on very little pressure. A slippery coating can back out as easily as it goes in, so the hook form answers for it — the point carries a slight curve that resists shaking loose. That curve also spans the nose and kake divide the series is built around: with a nose hook (ノセ) you keep winding and the fish loads itself onto the point; with a kake hook (掛け) you feel the bite and set it. The Floria takes a firm PE hook-set without tearing out, and still holds when you simply wind through the take. An up-eye keeps it seated in the cup of the spoon.

Key Features

  • Designed to work equally in the front (vertical) and rear (retrieve) setting
  • Silky F Coat — fluorine-based plating, low friction, high penetration
  • Slightly curved hook point that resists shake-off after the set
  • Up-eye specification so the hook seats correctly in the spoon's cup
  • Twelve hooks per pack, made in Japan by Katsuichi

Which Area Hook To Tie On

  • AH-9 "Floria" — the versatile one. Front or rear, vertical or retrieve, one hook.
  • AH-7 "Front" — the front-set specialist, thicker wire, straight point, for vertical fishing only.
  • AH-4 "Eric" and AH-6 "Spic" — the kake and nose patterns for the retrieve: set it yourself, or let it roll-hook on the wind.
  • AH-5 "Kunai", AH-1, AH-2 — deep blind spooning, the round-bend default, the barbless spooning specialist.

How To Rig It

  • Rear set — Fit it to the tail split ring, point riding upward, and wind at the slowest speed that keeps the blade wobbling.
  • Front set — Move it to the nose ring for vertical work, then lift and drop the spoon under the rod tip and read the bite on the line.
  • Keep the point clean — The coating does the work, so a point dulled on gravel loses most of the advantage. Change hooks rather than sharpen.
  • Size to the lure — #12 for the lightest micro spoons where hook mass changes the wobble, #10 or #8 as the general choice, #6 for larger blades.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — No managed trout ponds here, but a low-friction fine single suits high-pressure commercial ponds and light lure work: tilapia, small carp species, jetty fish on micro spoons and micro jigs. Many local catch-and-release ponds ban trebles.
  • North America — Stocked rainbow, brook and brown trout in put-and-take ponds, plus crappie and panfish on micro spoons.
  • Japan & East Asia — The home fishery: area trout on managed ponds, this pattern for anglers who switch between vertical and retrieve.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Stocked trout in Tasmania and Victoria; commercial trout fisheries in the UK, Germany and Italy; perch on small spoons.
