Yozuri Squid Jig "Ultra Bait" 80 mm, 5 g — A1680, M2 Crown

Ultra Bait is the bait-wrap model in Yo-Zuri's Ultra squid jig family — what Japanese anglers call an esa-maki jig. It is built to carry a strip of real bait lashed along the belly, adding scent and taste to the usual flash and glow. That is the answer when squid have gone fussy: on a hard-fished mark, in cold water, or late in a session when everything artificial is followed and dropped, a squid that will not commit to a bare jig will often hang on to a baited one long enough to be lifted. At 80 mm and a listed 5 g it is the lightest body in our Ultra range, so it drifts down slowly and holds in the strike zone with very little input.

Key Features

  • Bait-wrap (esa-maki) body designed to carry a strip or small whole bait
  • 80 mm, listed weight 5 g — the lightest and slowest-drifting of our Ultra models
  • Holographic body with internal prism foil and 3D eyes
  • Glow-in-the-dark belly strip for low light, deep water and night sessions
  • M2 rounded two-stage stainless crown
  • Eight colour codes, all in the luminous (L) family

How To Fish It

  • Choosing bait — Yo-Zuri's guidance for its bait-wrap squid lures lists fresh small fish, firm fish fillet, live baitfish, sardine, sand eel, halfbeak, smelt, shrimp and chicken breast. Firm flesh is the key — soft fillet washes off in a few drops, a firm strip or chicken breast survives several squid.
  • Wrapping it on — Push the bait onto the bait stop so it cannot slide back over the crown, lay it flat along the belly, then bind it with fine stainless bait wire or waxed thread in even turns from front to back and finish at the tail. Trim the strip so it does not hang past the hooks — an overhanging tail is what squid grab instead of the crown, and why baited jigs get short bites.
  • How often to rewrap — Change the bait when the flesh turns pale and soft, when the wraps loosen, or after a squid has chewed it — on a normal night, every twenty to thirty minutes. Cut and wrap spares before dark rather than under torchlight.
  • Present it slower than a bare jig — Drop to the working depth, lift through one or two slow winds, then hold for fifteen seconds or longer — scent needs time to work. Wrapping bait changes the balance and fall, so recheck your count after every rewrap.
  • Wind, do not strike — A baited jig is held longer than a bare one. Lean into the weight and wind at one steady speed to the surface.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Sotong torak and sotong katak on candat sotong nights off Terengganu and Johor, and from lit jetties where pressured squid refuse bare jigs.
  • North America — Market squid around Pacific piers and lit moorings, where a scented jig holds fish that are picking at the lights.
  • Japan & East Asia — The esa-maki style is standard for yariika, surume-ika and kensaki-ika from breakwaters and boats, often under a float.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Southern calamari over seagrass and from jetties in South Australia and Tasmania, where baited jigs are a long-standing method; European squid and cuttlefish on Mediterranean marks.
