Yozuri Oita Egi Cloth Wrapped With Tail — R2 / H2, Sizes #2.5 to #4.0

Oita refers to Oita Prefecture on Kyushu, one of the regions where the Japanese egi took its modern shape. Alongside the Yamagawa and Goto patterns, the Oita form is one of the classic regional body profiles that pre-date today's moulded jigs, and it is still the shape many Kyushu and Shikoku anglers keep in the box: a slim, straight-backed body with a fine taper that keeps a clean, level fall and slides sideways with very little rod input. This version is wrapped in cloth over the body and finished with a tail, so it carries texture for a squid to grip and a trailing element that keeps signalling on the pause. Two hook configurations, R2 and H2, run across seven model codes and four sizes from #2.5 to #4.0.

Choosing a size. #2.5 is the shallow, clear-water and small-squid size for pressured jetty marks. #3.0 is the everyday shore size. #3.5 casts into wind and holds depth over weed in running tide. #4.0 is for distance, deep edges and the larger autumn and winter squid that want a bigger silhouette.

Key Features

  • Traditional Oita-pattern egi body, slim and straight-backed for a level fall
  • Cloth-wrapped body giving texture for squid tentacles to hold
  • Trailing tail that keeps moving on the stop
  • Two hook configurations offered: R2 and H2
  • Seven model codes covering four sizes: #2.5, #3.0, #3.5 and #4.0
  • Three colour codes: AT37, AT47, AT59

How To Fish It

  • Cast and sink count — Let the egi fall on a controlled slack line while counting. Add two seconds each cast until you contact squid or bottom, then repeat that count.
  • Shakuri cadence — Rod tip low, snap sharply upward two to four times so the egi darts sideways, then stop dead and let it settle nose-down. Takes come on the fall, not the jerk.
  • Give it long pauses — The slim Oita profile falls cleanly and the tail keeps working while it does, so a five- to ten-second stop is not wasted time. Following squid usually commit during the stall.
  • Sweep, never strike — A squid wraps the body with its arms. If the line stops falling, twitches or drifts sideways, lean smoothly into the weight and wind under constant tension; pumping the rod puts in slack and loses them.
  • Work tide and structure — Fan cast across weed beds, harbour walls, rock edges and the current seams beside them, best on a moving tide at first and last light or after dark.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Bigfin reef squid (sotong torak) and cuttlefish (sotong katak) from lit jetties, breakwaters and fishing platforms in Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines.
  • North America — Market squid worked down the pilings on lit California piers and harbour walls after dark.
  • Japan & East Asia — Shore eging for aoriika, with kensaki-ika on deeper marks; this is the home pattern for Kyushu and Shikoku, and the same jigs are fished in Korea and Taiwan.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Southern calamari over seagrass in South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania; European squid and cuttlefish on Mediterranean and Atlantic night marks.

Recommended Pairing

  • Egi rod of roughly 8' to 8'6" with a fast tip that loads on the snap; step up to a heavier rating for #4.0
  • 2500–3000 spinning reel with PE 0.5–0.8 braid; high-visibility braid is easier to read at night
  • Fluorocarbon leader of roughly 8–14 lb, about a rod length
  • Long-handled squid net — lifting a squid on the crown hooks alone tears them off
