Yozuri Octopus Jig — #M 40 g / #L 50 g, E44 / E45

This is a lead-headed octopus jig for vertical work: a compact, fast-sinking bait built to reach the seabed and hold it in current. The body imitates a small cephalopod — bulging eyes, a high-contrast red-and-white profile and a skirt of soft tentacles that keeps flowing on the pause — over a wide crown of barbed hooks that gives good contact when an octopus wraps the bait rather than biting it. The line eye sits centrally on top, so the jig hangs level and rolls over rubble instead of digging in. Two weights are offered: #M at 40 g and #L at 50 g.

How it differs from the Takoyan. The Takoyan tako-egi is a buoyant shrimp body on a detachable claw sinker at 31 g and 42 g — a shore jig meant to be crawled through shallow rock. The E44/E45 is heavier and denser at 40 g and 50 g with the weight in the head, so it drops fast and holds bottom under a drifting boat or off a deep harbour wall. Take the 40 g for moderate depth and light tide, the 50 g for deeper ground and stronger current.

Key Features

  • Weighted-head octopus jig in two sizes: #M 40 g and #L 50 g
  • Cephalopod body with bulging eyes, a high-contrast finish and a top-centre line eye
  • Soft tentacle skirt that keeps moving during pauses and on the drop
  • Wide crown of multiple barbed hooks for holding a wrapped octopus
  • Fast sink for vertical control from a boat, pier or rock wall
  • Five colour codes: LSCH, LSOH, RDH, YDX2, YDX6

How To Fish It

  • Vertical bottom bump — Drop straight down, let it land, take up slack, then lift 30–50 cm and let it fall back. Repeat on the drift. Octopus find it on the ground, not in mid-water.
  • Slow drag from shore — Cast off a deep wall or pier, let it sink, then draw it back in slow pulls, pausing several seconds each time so the tentacles settle over the bottom.
  • Read the extra weight — A take registers as the jig becoming heavy, or a snag that gives slightly. Do not strike. Hold steady tension a few seconds to let it pull the jig in, then lean into it.
  • Winch, do not pump — Lift with constant pressure and keep winding. Slack lets an octopus reach rock and clamp its suckers; once it has, hold pressure and change the line angle rather than pull harder.
  • Work the structure — Rubble patches, reef edges, breakwater bases and mussel-covered pilings, with the tide running.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Octopus (gurita) around coral rubble, jetty foundations and rocky headlands in Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. Check state and marine-park rules before taking octopus.
  • North America — Octopus on the rocky Pacific coast and over Gulf and Florida hardbottom. Several jurisdictions limit or prohibit taking octopus — confirm local regulations first.
  • Japan & East Asia — Madako fished vertically from boats in Tokyo Bay, Osaka Bay and the Akashi Strait, and off deep harbour walls. Many ports and prefectures restrict octopus fishing — follow the posted rules.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Gloomy and common octopus off Australian rock walls, common octopus (pulpo, polpo) on Mediterranean and Atlantic reef, and rocky-shore octopus on Gulf coasts. Size limits, closed seasons and bans apply in several of these fisheries — observe local regulations.
