Yozuri Mini Aurora 48 mm A1696 Floating Squid Jig

The Mini Aurora is the small end of the floating sutte range — a 48 mm, 3 g body that buoys up off the mainline instead of hanging on it. At this size it is a dropper bait rather than a casting lure: rigged on a short branch above a lead sutte, an ika-metal jig or a sinker, it presents a small, motionless silhouette at a fixed depth, which is what wins bites when squid are following bigger jigs without committing. An internal holographic prism throws a broad, fine flash from a body far too small to make its own vibration, and a glow-accented belly keeps it readable in dim, stained or deep water. Three luminous colours, model code A1696.

When to reach for the small one. Choose 48 mm over a full-size sutte when squid are small, the water is clear and calm, the mark is heavily fished, or you are getting followers and short takes on a larger bait. It also stacks well: two or three Mini Auroras on a sabiki-style squid rig cover a spread of depths in one drop.

Key Features

  • Floating body, 48 mm and 3 g — the small, finesse size in the sutte range
  • Internal holographic Aurora prism for flash at low light levels
  • Glow-accented belly insert for dim, stained and deep water
  • Light, balanced build so it lifts clear of the mainline on a dropper
  • Three luminous colour codes: L8, L9, L11

How To Fish It

  • Run it above the weight — Tie it on a short branch 30–50 cm above a lead sutte, metal jig or sinker. It floats up and stands out sideways, giving a clean profile that squid can approach from below.
  • Set a depth and hold it — Drop to the bottom, wind up a counted number of turns, then stop and let it hang. Change the count, not the bait, until you find the layer holding squid.
  • Lift and stall — Raise the rod slowly through a metre, then hold completely still for five to ten seconds. On a small floating bait the stall does the work; constant movement gets it followed and refused.
  • Charge the glow before every drop — A few seconds of torchlight on the belly insert, then fish the shaded edge of the boat light where squid sit and ambush.
  • Sweep, never strike — Squid hold on with their arms. If the line goes slack, ticks or drifts sideways, lean into the weight and wind under steady tension — pumping the rod loses them.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Small bigfin reef squid (sotong torak) and cuttlefish (sotong katak) on candat sotong nights off Terengganu, Johor and the Indonesian islands, and jetty squid working under lights.
  • North America — Market squid on lit California piers and harbours, where a small bait on a multi-branch rig usually out-fishes a single large jig.
  • Japan & East Asia — Uki-sutte use in ika-metal fishing for kensaki-ika and yariika, and on traditional multi-bait squid rigs in Korea and Taiwan.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Southern calamari and small cuttlefish over seagrass and reef edges in southern Australia, and European squid on Mediterranean night marks.
