Yozuri Egi Aurie-Q "RS" A1604 / A1605 / A1606 Squid Jig — #1.6, #1.8, #2.0

This is the micro end of the Aurie-Q range: three sizes from 4 g to 8.3 g built for light and finesse eging rather than distance. The "RS" is Yo-Zuri's patented Rolling Shaft system, a line eye mounted on a rotating shaft so the body can roll freely on the jerk and so a hooked squid cannot spin line twist back up the leader. Small squid, pressured jetty marks and calm, clear water are where these earn their place, in conditions where a #3.0 egi gets followed and refused. The cloth wrap gives a texture squid hold onto, and the keel weight keeps the fall nose-down and stable.

Choosing a size. A1604 at 4 g falls around 4.0 sec/m — the slowest in this trio and the one for shallow, still water of roughly one to three metres. A1605 at 6 g falls around 3.2 sec/m for general light work. A1606 at 8.3 g falls around 3.0 sec/m and is the one to reach for once there is a breeze on the water or any run of tide. Heavier is not always faster: the Aurie-Q Cloth A1030 weighs 10 g but falls at roughly 5.3 sec/m, because body volume, not mass, sets the rate.

Key Features

  • Patented Rolling Shaft line eye — natural body roll, less line twist on the fight
  • Three light sizes: #1.6 at 4 g, #1.8 at 6 g, #2.0 at 8.3 g
  • Published sink rates of roughly 4.0, 3.2 and 3.0 sec/m respectively
  • Balanced keel weight for sharp side-to-side darting and a stable pause
  • 8-tine stainless crown hooks, Y2 hook type
  • Luminous and UV-reactive finishes for night and stained water

How To Fish It

  • Light-tackle cast and count — With a 4 g jig the fall does the work. Count it down, adding two seconds each cast until something stops it, then repeat that count.
  • Short, soft jerks — These sizes need no violent snap. Two or three short flicks with the tip low will dart the jig; then stop and let it settle. Squid grab on the pause, so give them a long one.
  • Vertical and tandem rigging — The small body suits a two-jig branch rig fished straight down beside pilings or under a boat light, lifted and dropped rather than retrieved.
  • Sweep, never strike — A squid wraps rather than bites. If the line slackens, tightens or drifts, lean smoothly into the weight and keep constant tension all the way in.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Candat sotong for small bigfin reef squid (sotong torak), cuttlefish (sotong katak) and pencil squid from lit jetties, kelong and harbour walls in shallow, clear water.
  • North America — Market squid at California pier lights, where a small, slow-falling jig works better than a heavy one in the light pool.
  • Japan & East Asia — Light eging for hiika and small kensaki-ika, plus autumn aoriika when the new season squid are still small; widely fished in Korea and Taiwan.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Small southern calamari over shallow seagrass in Victoria and South Australia; European squid on calm Mediterranean nights.

Specifications

Model Size Weight Sink Rate Hook Type
A1604 #1.6 4 g approx. 4.0 sec/m Y2 stainless crown
A1605 #1.8 6 g approx. 3.2 sec/m Y2 stainless crown
A1606 #2.0 8.3 g approx. 3.0 sec/m Y2 stainless crown

Colour codes: KVRE, KVSI, SLMA, SLOE, SLPE, SLRH across all three sizes; LRY additionally on #1.8 and #2.0; LE on #2.0. For heavier RS sizes see the Aurie-Q RS A1610 / A1584 / A1585 in #2.5, #3.0 and #3.5.

Recommended Pairing

  • Light egi or ajing rod, 7' to 7'9", rated for jigs under 10 g
  • 2000–2500 spinning reel with PE 0.3–0.5 braid
  • Fluorocarbon leader of roughly 4–8 lb — heavy leader kills the action on a 4 g jig
  • Two-jig branch rig or sabiki-style dropper for vertical jetty work
