This is a floating sutte, not a casting egi. Where an egi is weighted to dart and fall, a floating sutte carries no lead: it lifts, sits nose-up and hangs in the water column, which is exactly what makes it useful as the upper bait on a squid rig. Fished above a lead sutte, an ika-metal jig or a sinker, it stands out from the mainline instead of collapsing onto it, and stays presented at the depth you set while the weight below does the work. The 81 mm body carries a luminous finish and a Y2 twin-crown hook, and the nose ring at the head lets you clip on an extra weight, a light stick or a second bait so the same jig can be re-rigged for different depths. Supplied two per pack in size 2.5.

How To Fish It

• Rig it above the weight — Tie it on a short dropper 30–60 cm above a lead sutte, metal jig or sinker. Because it floats, it lifts away from the mainline and holds a nose-up posture that squid approach from below.
• Set the depth and hold it — Drop to the bottom, wind up a set number of turns, then stop. The weight anchors the depth and the floater hovers there. If nothing comes, change the count rather than the jig.
• Lift, stop, hang — Raise the rod slowly through a metre, then hold dead still for five to ten seconds. The stall is the presentation; squid grab a stationary floating bait far more often than a moving one.
• Charge the glow — Hold a torch on the luminous panels for a few seconds before each drop, and fish the shaded edge of a boat light rather than the bright centre.
• Read the line, do not strike — A squid hugs the bait with its arms. When the line goes slack, ticks or drifts, sweep smoothly into the weight and wind under constant tension — pumping puts in slack and the squid lets go.

• Southeast Asia — Bigfin reef squid (sotong torak) and cuttlefish (sotong katak) on candat sotong trips off Terengganu, Johor and the Indonesian islands, rigged above a lead sutte under the boat lights.
• North America — Market squid on lit California piers and harbours, fished as the upper bait on a two- or three-branch squid rig worked down the pilings.
• Japan & East Asia — Standard uki-sutte use in ika-metal and oma-rig fishing for kensaki-ika and yariika, and on traditional multi-bait squid rigs in Korea and Taiwan.
• Australia, Middle East & Europe — Southern calamari and cuttlefish over seagrass and reef edges in southern Australia, and European squid on Mediterranean and Atlantic night marks.

• Ika-metal or light boat rod with a soft, sensitive tip — the tip is the bite indicator on a hanging bait
• Small baitcaster or 2500-size spinning reel with PE 0.4–0.8 braid
• Fluorocarbon leader of roughly 8–14 lb, with the floater on a short branch off a three-way or dropper knot
• A lead sutte or metal jig below to set the depth; use the nose ring to add a light stick on dark nights
