Yozuri Egi Slow Sinking Squid Jig A1023 — Size #4.0

A slow-sinking egi is built around one idea: keep the jig in front of the squid for longer. A standard egi is weighted to fall at roughly three seconds per metre, which is fine over open sand but drops straight past squid sitting tight to weed, holding shallow, or following without committing. A slow-sinking version carries less effective ballast, so the same darting action is followed by a much longer, flatter descent — the phase in which almost every squid actually takes. That extra hang time is what makes it the jig for shallow weed beds, calm clear nights, pressured harbour marks and cold-water squid that will not chase.

Why #4.0 in a slow sinker. Size 4.0 is the large end of the egi range, normally chosen for distance, wind and big autumn or winter squid. Building that size as a slow sinker gives an unusual combination: a full-size silhouette and casting weight, but a fall gentle enough to work over shallow ground where a standard #4.0 would be on the bottom before a squid could reach it. It is a specialist choice for big squid in shallow, snaggy or heavily fished water.

How To Fish It

• Count the fall properly — A slow sinker needs a longer count than you are used to. Start at fifteen seconds, add five each cast, and keep counting even when you think it should have landed.
• Short jerks, long stops — Two or three sharp upward snaps with the rod tip low, then stop and do nothing for ten seconds or more. The stop is the point of the jig; cutting it short throws away what you paid for.
• Keep a controlled bow — Drop the rod tip after each jerk series so the line has a gentle bow, not slack. Watch that bow: if it straightens, jumps or moves sideways, a squid has it.
• Sweep, never strike — Squid hold with their arms rather than biting. Lean smoothly into the weight and wind under constant tension. Pumping the rod puts in slack and pulls the crown out.
• Fish it shallow and tight — Weed beds in two to five metres, harbour walls, rock edges and moorings on a moving tide, where a fast-falling jig fouls before the squid sees it.
