THE ANGLAR - PLAIN SHANK HOOK BRONZE 484 FISHING HOOK
The Anglar Plain Shank Hook Bronze 484 Fishing Hook
The 484 is a traditional bait hook: a wide, open bend, a forged shank and a solid ring eye, in a size range that runs from small panfish hooks up to 5/0. "Plain shank" means the shank is smooth — there are no slice barbs cut into it, as there are on a baitholder pattern. That is a trade-off, not an omission. A baitholder's shank barbs stop a worm or soft bait sliding toward the bend, useful over a long soak; a plain shank lets you thread bait on and off freely, does less damage to a live bait, and leaves no cut barb to act as a weak point. For prawn, cut bait, squid strip and live bait, plain shank is the stronger and more practical choice. The shank is also kirbed — the point sits slightly offset from the shank, so it is more likely to find purchase as the hook turns in a fish's mouth.
Key Features
- Plain (unbarbed) shank — no bait-slice barbs, easier baiting, no cut weak points
- Solid ring eye for knots, heavy leader and standard rigs
- Forged construction to resist opening under load
- Kirbed (offset) point for improved hook-up rate
- Rounded bend that spreads pressure through the hook
- Bronze finish for a subdued, low-glare appearance
- Nine sizes, #10 through #1 and 4/0–5/0, ten pieces per pack
Ringed vs flatted eye. This hook uses a closed ring eye, unlike the flatted Sode and Akita patterns elsewhere in the Anglar range. A flatted hook has its shank end pressed flat and must be snelled, which keeps the rig slim and suits fine line. A ring eye is stronger, takes an ordinary knot, and accepts heavy leader, a swivel or a snap — what you want once the fish are large enough to matter.
How To Rig It
- Running sinker bottom rig — Sinker above a swivel, then 50–100 cm of leader to the hook. The standard rig for prawn, squid strip, cut fish and shellfish over sand, mud and rubble.
- Live bait — Hook a prawn through the tail segment or a baitfish through the nose, keeping the bend clear. The smooth shank does far less damage to a live bait than a baitholder.
- Paternoster and jetty rigs — Hook on a short dropper above the sinker to hold bait off the bottom in current, or under a sliding float along rock walls.
- Sizing — This pattern uses Western numbering, the reverse of the Japanese sizes on the Sode hooks: #10 is the smallest and the number falls as the hook grows, then 4/0 and 5/0 are larger again. #10–#4 for panfish and small bait, #3–#1 for general bait fishing, 4/0–5/0 for large baits and heavy fish.
Target Species By Region
- Southeast Asia — Small sizes for tilapia, lampam and pond catfish (keli); large sizes for barramundi (siakap), grouper (kerapu), snapper (merah) and catfish off jetties and mangrove edges.
- North America — Panfish and perch in the small sizes; channel catfish, carp, striped bass, black drum and redfish on cut and live bait from 1/0 up.
- Japan & East Asia — General bottom bait fishing from breakwaters and boats: kurodai (black porgy), ainame and mixed reef species on prawn and squid strip.
- Australia, Middle East & Europe — Bream, flathead and mulloway in Australian estuaries; hamour and safi in the Gulf; carp, catfish and smoothhound in Europe.

Finish: bronze throughout. Bronze is an economical plating best suited to fresh water and short saltwater sessions — it will corrode if stored damp after salt use, so rinse and dry opened packets.
Recommended Pairing
