Tenya (テンヤ) is a Japanese boat method built around a one-piece lead head with a large fixed hook. It is dropped vertically, and the whole appeal comes from how naturally it falls — a live prawn, a bait strip or a soft plastic is impaled on the hook and allowed to flutter down on a semi-slack line. The method was developed for tenya madai (red seabream) and is also used on octopus and squid, where the weighted head keeps the bait pinned to the bottom. The Santec J-Tenya is a hybrid take on that head shape, combining traditional tenya appeal with a profile tuned for water resistance and a stable descent for bottom fishing in current.

How To Fish It

• Classic tenya free fall — Rig a whole live or dead prawn along the shank, drop with the reel in free spool and control the line with your thumb so the head falls at its own speed. Most tenya madai bites come mid-fall, and they feel like nothing more than the line stopping. Close the bail and lift straight into it — do not strike hard.
• Lift and flutter on the bottom — After touchdown, lift the rod slowly through two or three metres, lower the tip and let the head glide back. Repeat two or three times, then re-drop. This is the standard rhythm for snapper and grouper.
• Drop and drag for octopus and squid — Let the head sit on the seabed and drag it in short pulls with long pauses. Octopus grab and hold, so wind down until you feel weight before lifting.
• Soft plastic tenya — Thread a shrimp-profile soft bait onto the hook instead of natural bait for a faster, cleaner search pattern.
• Match the weight to the drift — Use 60 g when the boat is holding and depth is moderate; move to 80 g when tide picks up. A tenya fishing at an angle loses its falling action.

• Southeast Asia — Grouper (kerapu), mangrove jack and red snapper (jenahak, merah), threadfin (senangin) and emperor over rubble, wrecks and drop-offs; also octopus and squid on sand.
• North America — Vertical bottom work for black sea bass, sea trout, sheepshead and porgy on the Atlantic side, and rockfish and lingcod on the Pacific coast.
• Japan & East Asia — The home water for this method: tenya madai and hitotsu-tenya for red seabream, plus madako octopus, kasago and hata on the same head.
