Hinotsu Kantuki Chinu NSB 4791 Hook Pack

Kannuki (カンヌキ) is the Japanese word for a door bolt, borrowed by anglers for the hard bony hinge at the very corner of a fish's mouth, where upper and lower jaw meet. It is the best place in the mouth to be hooked: the tissue there holds a point through a long fight, it is well clear of the throat and gills, and the hook pulls against bone instead of tearing soft membrane. A kantuki pattern is shaped so the hook slides across the jaw as the fish turns away and rotates into that corner by itself — the same working principle as a circle hook, arrived at from a different direction. The 4791 applies it to the Chinu bend in 2X-strong wire with a black-nickel finish, in twelve sizes.

Why bream need it. Chinu is black sea bream, and bream and porgy species everywhere share the same awkward mouth: small, hard, lined with crushing molars built for shellfish and crab. A hook that sets inside that mouth is biting into a pavement of teeth and usually skates out on the second head shake. Bream also mouth a bait, back off, then return — so whoever strikes the first knock pulls the bait out of a mouth that never closed on it. A kantuki profile answers both: no strike is needed, and when it seats, it seats where the jaw is bone.

Key Features

  • 2X-strong construction — thicker, high-tensile wire for pressure a standard Chinu hook would not take
  • Forged hook body for resistance to bending and opening
  • Deep Chinu bend with a wide working gap and a generous holding area
  • Eagle Cutting point with angled cutting edges for penetration with less resistance
  • Pronounced barb to hold bait and keep the hook engaged through runs and head shakes
  • Ringed eye for a direct knot to leader or terminal rig
  • Black-nickel (NSB) finish for corrosion and wear protection in salt water

How To Rig It

  • Let the fish turn — do not strike — When the rod loads, lean into it slowly and start winding. That steady pressure walks the hook across the jaw into the corner. A hard strike drives the point at the roof of the mouth and pops back out.
  • Running sinker on the bottom — Egg or ball sinker above a swivel, 60–100 cm of leader. Fish it with the rod in a holder or the reel in free spool so the fish can move off before the line comes tight.
  • Sliding float down a wall — Stopper knot to depth, light shot, prawn or crab bait drifted along a breakwater or jetty face. Feed line as the float goes under, then wind.
  • Live and cut bait — In the larger sizes, pin a live bait through the nose or hook a strip once through the end so it streams. Leave the point clear — a buried point cannot rotate.
  • Sizing — Japanese gō numbering: the number rises as the hook grows. #1–#5 for bream, croaker and small reef fish, #6–#9 for snapper and grouper on prawn or strip, #10–#13 for heavy live baits on bottom and boat rigs.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Yellowfin seabream, croaker (gelama), snapper (merah), grouper (kerapu) and mangrove jack from jetties, rock walls and reef bottom; barramundi (siakap) on live bait in the larger sizes.
  • North America — Sheepshead, black drum, porgy and tautog around bridge pilings and jetties on shrimp, crab and clam; redfish on bottom-fished cut bait.
  • Japan & East Asia — The pattern's own fish: kurodai and kibire (black and yellowfin sea bream) from breakwaters and rocky shores, and madai on boat bait rigs.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Yellowfin bream, snapper and mulloway in Australian estuaries and inshore reef; hamour, sheri and safi in the Gulf; gilthead bream and wrasse on Mediterranean marks.
