Gamakatsu Kairyo Soi Ringed Hook (Made In Japan)

In Japanese hook language soi (ソイ) means the rockfish and grouper-type bottom dwellers that hole up in reef and rock, and a soi pattern is built to match them: heavy wire, a strong bend, and a shape that holds while the fish dives back into cover. Kairyo (改良) means “improved”, Gamakatsu’s term for a revised version of an existing pattern. This is a heavy-duty bait hook for rockfish and general boat fishing. Its non-offset point stops bait spinning, which cuts line twist and lets the point drive straight in, while a slightly shortened shank makes the hook turn and set faster inside the mouth. How To Rig It

• Two-hook bottom rig — Snell the hooks onto droppers above the sinker and work rubble and reef edges. Lift the rod smoothly rather than striking, so the short shank can turn.
• Running sinker on the boat — Slide an egg sinker above a swivel, run a leader to the ring eye and bait with squid strip, prawn or cut fish. Let the fish take line briefly, then load up.
• Live bait beside structure — Pin a small live baitfish through the nose or back and drop it tight to the reef. Keep the drag firm from the first bite.
• Heavy leader, tied direct — Because the eye is ringed, snell or uni-knot straight onto heavy mono or fluorocarbon; no split ring needed.

• Southeast Asia — Grouper (kerapu) and snapper (merah) on nearshore reef and wreck, barramundi (siakap) around jetty pilings, and croaker (gelama) on the smaller sizes.
• North America — Lingcod, rockfish and cabezon on Pacific reef; black sea bass, tautog and grouper on Atlantic and Gulf structure.
• Japan & East Asia — The original soi targets — kurosoi and other rockfish — plus kasago, ainame and hata on boat bottom rigs and breakwater root fishing.

Specifications

Sizes follow the Japanese gō (号) system, in which the number rises as the hook gets larger — the reverse of Western numbering. #16 is the smallest hook here and #24 the largest.

Recommended Pairing

• Boat bottom or jigging-class rod with a loading tip; overhead or spinning reel, 30–80 lb braid
• Heavy mono or fluorocarbon leader tied straight to the ring eye
• Enough lead to hold bottom in current; a short wire trace only where cutlassfish or mackerel are present
• Smaller sizes for croaker and bream-class fish, larger sizes for grouper and snapper
