DUEL EZ-Q Aurora 3.5" Squid Jig A1638 / A1639 / A1640

The EZ-Q Aurora is the big-water member of the series: a 3.5-size body in three heavy weights, finished in aurora film rather than wrapped cloth. A cloth egi diffuses light softly; an aurora finish is reflective, throwing shifting rainbow flashes as the jig rolls and turns, so it keeps signalling in deep water, in current, and on overcast days when a matte cloth body goes flat. At 30g, 35g and 40g these are far heavier than a shore casting egi, which puts them in boat and tip-run territory — down to the strike zone quickly and holding depth while the boat drifts, where a light egi is swept away.

Choosing a weight. 30g for lighter current and shallower drifts, 35g as the general boat weight, 40g when the drift is fast or the water deep. Use the lightest weight that still holds a near-vertical line — a jig hanging under the boat catches far more squid than one dragging out behind it.

Key Features

  • Aurora reflective body — a non-cloth finish returning ambient and ultraviolet light for visibility in low light and murky water
  • Wave-motion segmented body for lifelike movement on the sink and retrieve
  • Rudder sinker system for a stable fall on vertical and diagonal drops
  • Rolling shaft mechanism that eliminates line twist through slow-jig and lift-and-drop work
  • Trick Hook system with UV effect for appeal and controlled hook placement
  • Three weights in the 3.5 size class: 30g, 35g and 40g

How To Fish It

  • Tip-run drift — Drop to the bottom, wind up a turn or two, then lift twice and hold still while the boat drifts and the jig swings back. The rod tip is the bite indicator: it either loads heavily or goes suddenly light.
  • Lift and drop at anchor — Two or three sharp lifts to make the finish flash, then a long controlled fall on semi-slack line. Count it so you can repeat the productive depth.
  • Work the flash where there is light to reflect — The aurora finish is at its best under boat lights, in daylight at depth, and where suspended matter kills colour. In pitch dark with no light source, a luminous body usually out-fishes it.
  • Sweep, never strike — Squid hold the jig with their arms. When the tip loads, sweep into the weight and wind under unbroken tension; pumping the rod puts slack in the line and loses them.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Candat sotong boat trips off Terengganu, Pahang and Johor for bigfin reef squid (sotong torak) and cuttlefish (sotong katak), fished under the lights where the heavy weights cut drift and current.
  • North America — Market squid on deeper harbour and nearshore marks along the California coast, where a light egi will not hold depth.
  • Japan & East Asia — Tip-run boat eging for aoriika, where the 3.5 size is the standard choice for the larger spring squid; also fished in Korea and Taiwan.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Southern calamari on deeper seagrass and reef edges in South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania; European squid and cuttlefish on Mediterranean drifts.

Specifications

Model Size Weight Finish Recommended Use
A1638 3.5" 30g Aurora reflective Lighter current, shallower tip-run
A1639 3.5" 35g Aurora reflective General-purpose boat eging
A1640 3.5" 40g Aurora reflective Deeper water, stronger current

Available colours: LLMB and LPOG in all three weights. SKU prefixes 30A1638, 30A1639 and 30A1640.

Recommended Pairing

  • Tip-run or boat egi rod, roughly 6' to 7', with a soft solid tip that shows the bite before you feel it
  • 2500–3000 spinning reel with PE 0.4–0.8 braid — thin line cuts current and keeps the drop vertical
  • Fluorocarbon leader of roughly 10–16 lb, two to three metres
  • Long-handled squid net — larger squid on barbless crown hooks come off easily at the rail
