Decoy SV-34 S.G. Head Jig Head — Made In Japan

The SV-34 S.G. Head is Decoy's general-purpose saltwater jig head, and its concept is narrower than "general purpose" suggests: pressured seabass. On water that sees minnows and tail-spin jigs every night, fish learn the hard-lure silhouette and stop committing to it. A soft stick bait on an S.G. Head gives them a slower, softer target, and the head is balanced to carry that plastic through a steady retrieve, a shake retrieve or a lift-and-fall without the bait rolling over. The versatility follows from there — the same rig accounts for cutlassfish (tachiuo), flatfish such as hirame and magochi, and pelagics passing through. An assist eye under the head takes a treble or support hook for short-biting fish. Factory range #1 to #4/0, 3.5–21 g; this store carries six combinations.

SV-34 Versus SV-34H

• SV-34 (this head) — #1 to #4/0, 3.5 g to 21 g. Shore and light boat work: seabass on a flat, a shad along a breakwater, a soft bait drifted over sand for flatfish. Weights you cast, not weights you drop.
• SV-34H Heavy — #5/0 to #10/0, 28 g to 100 g. Vertical deep work for grouper and heavy pelagics. If the line leaves the rod tip at under about 45 degrees on the drop, you have run out of SV-34.
• Against the plain bottom heads: SV-61 Salt Special covers 5–9 g and SV-62 Salt Special Heavy 7–21 g in similar wire. The assist eye is what separates the S.G. Head from both.

How To Rig It

• Rigging the stick bait — Enter the nose square and thread the body straight down the shank so it hangs without a kink. A bait rigged with a bend rolls, which is the fault this head exists to avoid.
• Steady retrieve for seabass — Cast across the current, let the head settle, then wind slowly and evenly so the bait swims just above the fish. Work tide lines and the shadow edge under jetty lights; let the current do most of the moving.
• Shake retrieve — Add small rod-tip shakes so the plastic flickers. This is the change-up when a straight retrieve is followed and refused.
• Lift and fall for flatfish and tachiuo — Touch bottom, lift two or three turns, then drop on a controlled line. Takes come on the fall, so watch the line.

• Southeast Asia — Barramundi (siakap) and mangrove jack at jetty lights and river mouths, queenfish off rock walls, grouper (kerapu) on shallow reef.
• North America — Striped bass, redfish, speckled trout and flounder on a stick bait; Pacific rockfish and calico bass over inshore structure.
• Japan & East Asia — Suzuki (seabass) on soft stick baits, tachiuo on a lift-and-fall, hirame and magochi over sand — the fisheries it was built for.

• 4–6 inch soft stick baits and shads on the 5–7 g heads, 5–7 inch bodies on 14 and 18 g
• Add a short assist or small treble on the assist eye when fish bite short
