How To Rig It

• Live prawn under a float — Pin the hook through the last tail segment or the horn above the eyes so the prawn stays kicking. Set the float so the bait sits just above structure and let the tide carry it along a jetty or bridge line.
• Nose-hooked live baitfish — Pass the point up through both lips or the nostrils, cast without force, and let the bait swim on a semi-slack line. Give a fish two or three seconds to turn before lifting into it.
• Running sinker on sand — Slide a small ball sinker down to a swivel, run a 50–80 cm fluorocarbon leader to the hook and let the bait wash naturally in the current over sand and rubble.
• Setting on light wire — Lift steadily rather than striking. Fine wire will straighten if loaded past the tackle it was matched to, so keep the drag light and let the rod work.

• Southeast Asia — Live prawn for mangrove jack, barramundi (siakap), grunter and small grouper around jetties and mangrove drains, plus whiting off sand.
• North America — Live shrimp and finger mullet for speckled trout, redfish, flounder and snook inshore, plus crappie and perch on minnows.
• Japan & East Asia — Live and natural bait for aji, mebaru and kasago on light game tackle, and small seabass around harbour walls.
