Decoy Egg Snap SN-3 Made In Japan
The SN-3 is the cross-lock power snap of the Decoy SN range — the one to fit when the connection has to hold rather than change quickly. Its egg-shaped, round-bent body does two jobs: the cross-lock closure locks positively under load, while the rounded bend keeps the lure eye free to swing so the action is not deadened by a hard-angled connector. Katsuichi form it from high-hardness stainless steel (SUS) to suppress deformation and raise breaking strength, which is why they rate it from medium-class lures such as crankbaits through heavy big baits to saltwater plugging for seabass and mahi-mahi. Decoy list the full SN-3 range from #1 to #5; this listing is size #1.
Where It Sits In The SN Range
- SN-3 (this model) — strength first, in a single rounded gate. Slimmer on the lure eye than the W snap, and the one to choose when a plug's action still matters at that weight.
- SN-6 W — the other power option, with a double-bend body and a gate that opens from either side. Bulkier, and the pick when the drag is fully locked.
- Lighter and faster: SN-1 Round for everyday work, SN-2 V for darting minnows, SN-5 Spiral changed by rotation with no gate at all, and SN-7 Open Swivel for building rigs rather than clipping plugs.
Key Features
- Cross-lock structure for secure locking and high breaking strength
- High-hardness stainless steel (SUS) that resists deformation under sustained load
- Round bent, egg-shaped body that minimises interference with lure action
- Rated by Decoy for medium lures through to heavy big baits
- NS Black finish, made in Japan by Katsuichi; 7 pieces per pack
How To Rig It
- Where it goes — Tie the leader to the closed rounded bend with a wetted uni or improved clinch, never onto the gate wire. Clip the lure's split ring rather than the bare eye, so the ring carries the wear.
- Matching size to tackle — Size #1 as stocked suits crankbaits, medium minnows and vibes on roughly 10–20 lb class casting and spinning gear. Step up through the larger sizes for big baits and heavy saltwater plugging; match the class of tackle, not the size of the lure.
- Check the cross-lock every few casts — Seat the wire fully into the lock, then pull the lure sideways against the closure. A gate sprung by a hard fight, or one that no longer seats cleanly, is finished.
- When the snap is the weakest link — Decoy do not print a rated strength on this range. On a locked drag, on a heavy bait, or where a fish has to be turned out of timber or rock, the whole rig is hanging on one closure. Move to a larger SN-3 or to the SN-6 rather than run this size hard.
- Rinse after saltwater — Dried salt stiffens the cross-lock and hides corrosion inside it. Flush the terminal set after every trip and retire any snap showing rust at the closure.

Recommended Pairing
- Medium to medium-heavy baitcasting and spinning rods with 2500–4000 size reels
- Braided main line to a fluorocarbon or nylon leader; keep the knot on the closed bend
- Add a rolling swivel above the snap for spoons, spinners and lures that rotate
- Drop to the SN-1 or SN-2 when the connector's weight starts to blunt a small lure's action
