THE ANGLAR - O'SHAUGHNESSY 4009 HOOK PACK BLACK FISHING HOOK
The Anglar O’Shaughnessy 4009 Hook Pack, Black
The O’Shaughnessy is the workhorse saltwater bait shape — long shank, deep round bend, open profile — and Anglar now lists seven of them. What separates the 4009 from the rest is the point. Every other O’Shaughnessy in the range runs its point inline, in the same plane as the shank. The 4009 is kirbed: the point is swung slightly off the centreline. That matters when you cannot see the bite. A fish that takes a bottom bait side-on and turns away presents the hook edge-on, and an inline point can be drawn through the mouth without touching anything; a kirbed point is already angled across the jaw and finds purchase on the same pull. The cost is a little of the direct energy transfer an inline point gives on a hard straight strike — a fair trade for a hook that lives in a rod holder. Forged body, cutting point, pronounced barb, solid ringed eye, black finish. One size only: #3/0, ten to a pack.
Key Features
- Classic O’Shaughnessy profile — long shank, rounded bend, open gap for natural baits
- Kirbed (offset) point — the only offset-point O’Shaughnessy in the Anglar range
- Sharp cutting point with angled surfaces for fast penetration
- Forged through shank and bend to resist opening under load
- Pronounced retaining barb; solid ringed eye for mono, fluorocarbon, braid or leader
- Black finish for a discreet look and added surface protection
- Single size, #3/0, ten hooks per pack
How To Rig It
- Cut fish strip — Thread a long strip twice along the shank so it lies flat and streams in the current, leaving the bend and the kirbed point clear.
- Whole baitfish or squid — In through the mouth and out behind the head, or twice through the thick end of a squid tube. The long shank stops soft bait balling over the bend.
- Paternoster (apollo) rig — Two droppers above the sinker over reef, wreck and bridge structure. Wind down and lean into the fish rather than striking on slack line.
- Running sinker — Sinker sliding to a swivel and a long leader on sand and mud, so a wary fish moves off before it feels weight. This is where the offset point earns its place.
Target Species By Region
- Southeast Asia — Grouper (kerapu), red snapper (ikan merah) and golden snapper (jenahak) over reef and wreck; barramundi (siakap) at river mouths; catfish (duri) and croaker (gelama) on estuary mud, where the long shank keeps fingers clear of the spines.
- North America — Mangrove and red snapper, grouper, striped bass and bluefish on cut bait; channel and blue catfish in the rivers.
- Japan & East Asia — Bukkomi (ブッコミ) bottom baits from breakwaters for anago and kurodai, and dozuki (胴突き) boat dropper rigs for hata.
- Australia, Middle East & Europe — Snapper, emperor and mulloway on Australian bottom rigs; hamour and sheri in the Gulf; cod, ling and conger over European wrecks.

The 4009 is the odd one out twice over: the only offset point and the only single-size card. Take it when bites are unseen and side-on; take an inline model when you set the hook yourself.
Recommended Pairing
- #3/0 suits general reef, wreck, jetty and estuary bottom fishing, 30–50 lb braid with a 40–80 lb leader
- Snell heavy mono to the ringed eye for drifted or slow-trolled whole baits
- Add a short wire trace where mackerel, barracuda or shark feed
- Rinse and dry before storage; replace any hook showing rust at the point
