Santec 254 O’Shaughnessy Bronze w/Big Eye 45709 Fishing Hook

This is the heavy-bait end of the O’Shaughnessy family. Same fundamentals as the rest of the pattern — long straight shank, deep forged bend, plenty of room for a substantial natural bait — but built in premium high-carbon steel, finished in bronze, and offered only in the sizes that matter for big baits: #1/0 through #5/0. The point is a chemically ground Eagle Cutting shape set kirbed, offset to one side of the shank, so that a fish crushing a whole bait broadside and turning away meets the point rather than the shank. The bronze finish is the subdued option in the range: a brownish-gold that goes flat and dark in the water instead of flashing, which suits crab, squid and cut baits fished still on the bottom.

The big eye is the reason to buy this hook. An oversized ringed eye changes what you can connect to the hook, and it is the one thing that separates the 45709 from every other O’Shaughnessy in the range. A standard eye pinches a heavy knot — 100 lb mono or thick fluorocarbon crushes up against the ring and the knot ends up bearing on a bend instead of seating properly. A big eye lets that leader pass through with room to draw the knot down cleanly, and it takes a crimp sleeve just as easily. It also lets you clip straight in: a big eye will accept a split ring, a snap or a clip directly, so a rig can be swapped without cutting and retying, and it swallows two or three passes of lighter line, which is how you build a twin-hook stinger or a two-hook snelled rig on a single whole bait. How To Rig It

• Whole bait, crimped trace — Crimp a heavy mono or fluorocarbon leader straight to the enlarged eye and pin or bridle a whole fish, squid or crab. This is the rig the big eye exists for.
• Two-hook stinger on one bait — Thread a second length of leader through the eye alongside the first and run a trailing hook back to the tail of a long bait. Short-biting fish get the stinger.
• Heavy paternoster on reef and wreck — Two short droppers above a heavy sinker, hooks clipped in on split rings so a chewed trace can be swapped without retying. Lean into the fish rather than striking up on slack.
• Slow-trolled or drifted dead bait — A whole gar or squid on a swivel and a light sinker along drop-offs and current lines. The kirbed point sets as the fish turns with the bait.
