Maruseigo (丸セイゴ) is named for its fish. Seigo is a young Japanese sea bass, suzuki in its first year, and maru means round, for the evenly rounded bend. Put together they describe the standard Japanese sea bass and surf bait hook: a rounded bend that spreads load through the wire, carried on a shank noticeably longer than a bream or beak pattern. The long shank is the whole argument for it: a worm, live prawn or strip of cut fish rides stretched along the wire instead of balling up around the bend, there is steel to grip with pliers in a rasping mouth, and the knot stays clear of gill plates and teeth. Hayabusa list it as Maruseigo Ringed Black Nickel, product number ET17671, with a forged body, offset point and ringed eye, made in Japan for consistent shape, finishing and point quality. Where the ET14371 Iseama is the heavy all-rounder, this is its saltwater cousin: same round-bend logic, more shank, cut for baits that move.

How To Rig It

• Live prawn or baitfish for sea bass — Hook a prawn through the horn ahead of the dark spot, or a baitfish through the nose, and drift it past pilings, bridge lights and river mouths on a running sinker or free line.
• Surf and estuary cast rig — Two snelled droppers above the sinker with sandworm, squid strip or cut fish. Thread long baits up the shank so they cast straight and do not fold back over the point.
• Float rig on the tide — Sliding float to a short trace along jetty faces and rock walls. Let the bait swing with the current rather than anchoring it in one spot.
• Setting the hook — Wind down until you feel weight, then lift smoothly. An offset long-shank hook sets on steady pressure; a hard strike into slack line pulls it out of the side of a mouth.

Specifications

Sizes follow the Japanese gō (号) system: the number rises as the hook gets larger, the reverse of Western numbering. #6 is the smallest here, #20 the largest, and the ladder steps in twos rather than ones. Pack counts drop as the size climbs, from 15 at #6 to 5 at #20.

Choosing a size. #6–#10 are the light estuary, surf and pier sizes for sandworm and prawn tails; #12–#16 is the everyday sea bass and jetty band; #18–#20 take a whole live prawn, a live baitfish or a big cut bait. If the bait is round rather than long — crab, shellfish, peeled prawn — the ET0187 Chinu short shank hides inside it better.
