DECOY - KR-31 OCTOPUS HOOK MADE IN JAPAN
Decoy KR-31 Octopus Hook
The KR-31 is a classic octopus-pattern single hook — short shank, round bend, turned-in point — built for fishing natural baits. That shape does two things at once: it lets a bait sit naturally without stiffening it, and the inward-turned point tends to find the corner of the jaw rather than the throat, which matters when fish are released. The range runs from #3 and #2 for small live and cut baits up to #6/0 for whole fish and large squid strips, in black nickel for low visibility and red where a flash of colour at the bait head draws the take.
Key Features
- Octopus bend with a turned-in point for reliable corner-of-the-mouth hook-ups
- Short shank that lets bait hang naturally and hides well inside a bait strip
- Sharp, consistent penetration on both soft and tough baits
- Suited to live bait, cut bait, squid and prawn in fresh and salt water
- Two finishes: black nickel for clear water, red for added visual attraction
- Sizes from #3 up to #6/0, covering light and heavy bait work
How To Rig It
- Live bait through the nose — Pass the point up through the bottom jaw and out the top of the nose, or sideways through the nostrils. The bait swims forward naturally and stays lively on a drifted or slow-trolled line.
- Cut and strip bait — Enter the point once through the thick end of the fillet or squid strip and leave the point fully exposed. Never thread bait up the shank; a bunched bait masks the gap and costs hook-ups.
- Prawn and shrimp — Pin the hook through the tail segment or under the horn at the head, and fish minimal weight so the bait drifts naturally on the tide.
- Snell and paternoster rigs — Snell the hook so the pull comes in line with the shank, then set it on a paternoster or running sinker rig for bottom fishing over reef.
Target Species By Region
- Southeast Asia — Grouper (kerapu), snapper (merah), mangrove jack and barramundi (siakap) on live prawn or cut bait around jetties, mangrove drains and inshore reef.
- North America — Salmon and steelhead on cured roe, halibut and rockfish on cut bait in the Pacific, striped bass, flounder and catfish in the Atlantic and inland.
- Japan & East Asia — General bait fishing (esa-tsuri) from breakwaters and boats for madai, kasago, ainame and anago; larger sizes for whole-bait bottom fishing.
- Australia, Middle East & Europe — Snapper, mulloway, flathead and bream on pilchard and squid baits; hamour and emperor on Gulf reef; cod, pollack and conger on European wreck marks.
