Santec 4X Treble Hook PS 4629

The 4629 is a heavy-duty replacement treble for hard lures. The "4X" is a wire-strength grade, not a size and not a wire multiplier: a 4X strong treble keeps the same gap and shank as the standard hook in that size but is built from wire four steps heavier on the maker's scale, so it holds its shape when a big fish loads it up. That is the whole point — the geometry you already trust, with far more resistance to being straightened. It is built on a forged body in PS / Parma Steel with an Eagle Cutting point profile, sharp barbs, round bends for a generous gap, and a centre-balanced eye so the hook hangs naturally from a split ring and does not upset the lure's swim. The packaging identifies it as made in Japan. Seven sizes run from #6 to #3/0.

Key Features

  • 4X strong wire grade — same hook size, much heavier wire
  • Forged body in PS / Parma Steel, per the packaging specification
  • Eagle Cutting point geometry with sharp barbs on all three points
  • Round bends for a wide gap, and a centre-balanced eye so the lure keeps its action
  • Seven sizes: #6, #4, #2, #1, #1/0, #2/0, #3/0

How To Rig It

  • Replace before the trip, not after the loss — Retire a hook when a point will not grip your thumbnail after filing, when it is chipped or rusted, and immediately if a fish has pulled it open even slightly. A treble straightened once has been work-hardened and will fail again in the same place.
  • Fresh to salt is the classic upgrade — Lures built for bass, pike or trout carry light-wire trebles specified for those fisheries. The same lure cast at queenfish, giant trevally or Spanish mackerel needs a 4X hook before the first cast, not after a straightened point on the boat.
  • Match the size to the lure body — Fit the largest treble whose points still swing clear of the body and the neighbouring hook. As a guide: #6 and #4 for 40–70mm minnows and small crankbaits, #2 and #1 for 70–100mm bodies, #1/0 and #2/0 for 110–140mm minnows, poppers and stickbaits, #3/0 for large casting and trolling lures. Too heavy a hook makes a floating lure sit low and kills a shallow crankbait's wobble, so swim it boatside after the change.
  • Treble or double — A treble covers more angles and converts more strikes, which is why it belongs on hard lures worked in open water, over reef edges and along drop-offs. A double snags less around cover and is quicker and kinder to unhook. If fish are being lost rather than snagged, stay with the treble; in weed, timber or pads the double is the better answer.
  • Upgrade the split rings with the hooks — A 4X treble will out-pull a standard factory ring, so replace both together, using split-ring pliers rather than opening rings by hand.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Barramundi (siakap), queenfish (talang), giant trevally (GT) and Spanish mackerel (tenggiri) on casting and trolling lures; hampala barb (sebarau), peacock bass and toman on freshwater hard baits.
  • North America — Largemouth and smallmouth bass on crankbaits and jerkbaits, walleye and pike on trolled minnows, striped bass and redfish on inshore hard lures.
  • Japan & East Asia — Seabass (suzuki) on shore minnows, yellowtail on shore jigging plugs, and bass on reservoir hard baits.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Barramundi, mangrove jack and Murray cod on hard bodies; pike, zander and perch on European jerkbaits; queenfish and trevally on Gulf casting lures.
