The Hinotsu Kantuki DX-SOI JK-2 is named for soi — the Japanese rockfish that lives hard against structure and dives straight back into it the moment it feels the hook. That is the job this hook is built for: forged wire that will not open up when a fish is pulled out of a hole under maximum pressure. The chemically sharpened Eagle Cutting point uses angled cutting edges to get in fast, and the kirbed point — set slightly off the shank's centre line — turns into the jaw on angles where a straight point would slide past. The solid ringed eye lets a bait or assist cord swing freely while giving a connection stronger than a bent-over eye, and the black nickel finish resists rust in salt water. Eleven sizes from #10 to #26 cover small rockfish baits through to heavy bottom rigs and assist-hook building.

How To Rig It

• Structure-fish bait rig — Thread a whole prawn, squid strip or small live bait so the point stays clear of the shank, then drop tight to rock, wreck or bridge pilings on a short leader. Rockfish species run straight for cover, so set hard and lift immediately — the first two seconds decide whether the fish reaches its hole.
• Building assist hooks — The solid ring makes this a natural single-hook assist for slow-pitch and vertical jigs. Whip the assist cord to the shank, pass it through the ring, and set the finished length to roughly one third to one half of the jig body — enough to reach a fish without wrapping the leader.
• Sinker and leader — Use the lightest sinker that holds bottom in the current, and over foul ground run it on a lighter dropper line so a snag costs you the lead and not the whole rig.
• Size selection — Match the hook to the bait, not the fish. Small prawn and cut baits sit best on #10–#16; whole squid, larger live baits and heavy bottom rigs want #17–#26. Oversizing kills a small bait's natural movement.
• Check the point — Fishing this tight to rock blunts points quickly. Run the point across a thumbnail between drops; if it slides instead of catching, change it.
