Hayabusa FS458 PE With Carbon Core Assist Line, Made In Japan

This is material for building your own assist hooks, not a finished rig. Hayabusa calls it Assist Line PE Special: a braided PE cord with a carbon core running through the centre. The PE braid carries the load and resists abrasion where the cord rubs the jig's split ring, assist eye and body; the carbon core does something different — it stiffens the cord so the finished assist stands out from the jig instead of collapsing back against it. That single property is what makes or breaks a slow-pitch rig. A slow-pitch jig falls flat and horizontal for several seconds, and during that fall a limp assist folds along the jig body, hides the hook point and wraps the leader. A carbon-cored cord holds the hook proud and pointing away, so the fish that comes in on the flutter finds a hook where it expects one. Supplied in 3 m lengths in blue, in three breaking strengths.

Key Features

  • Braided PE with a central carbon core thread — strength and stiffness without extra bulk
  • Carbon core keeps the finished assist standing away from the jig body instead of laying flat against it
  • Strong yet thin, so hook penetration and lure presentation are not compromised
  • Braided structure is flexible enough to form clean loops but tough enough to resist abrasion and fatigue
  • Resists wear where the cord contacts jig holes, split rings and sharp ring edges
  • Blue colour — subtle underwater, easy to see in the hand while tying
  • Three strengths — 100 lb, 120 lb and 150 lb — to match target size and abrasion risk
  • 3 m per pack: enough for several assist rigs without paying for a full spool. Made in Japan

How To Tie And Fish It

  • Setting the length — Measure the finished assist against the jig you will hang it on: about one third to one half of the jig's body length, split ring to hook bend. Shorter than that and a short-biting fish never reaches the point; longer and the hook wraps the leader on the drop.
  • Building the loop — Fold the cord back on itself over the hook shank, thread the tag end back through the hollow braid with a rigging needle, then whip the shank with assist thread and seal the wrap. Test the finished loop by hand before it costs you a fish.
  • Single or double — A single assist gives the cleanest jig action and the fewest tangles. A double raises the hook-up rate on fish that swipe rather than swallow; tie the two at slightly different lengths so the hooks cannot foul each other.
  • Front or rear mount — Front (nose) mount is the default for vertical and speed jigging, where fish hit the head of a rising jig. Slow pitch usually runs front and rear, or rear only, because the jig falls flat and fish take it from behind and below.
  • Why the stiffness matters — On the long horizontal fall of a slow-pitch jig, the carbon core is what keeps the hook standing off the body through the whole flutter. Keep these rigs short and let the core do the work.
  • Inspect and re-tie — Run the cord through your fingers after every good fish. PE is abrasion-resistant, not cut-proof; a furred sheath near the split ring means re-tie now, and toothy species still call for a wire or heavy leader ahead of the jig.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Assist rigs for gerepoh (giant trevally), queenfish, red snapper (ikan merah) and grouper (kerapu) on reef and wreck marks off Rompin, Sabah and eastern Indonesia.
  • North America — Amberjack, grouper and snapper on Gulf and Atlantic wrecks; yellowtail, lingcod, halibut and rockfish on West Coast jigging trips.
  • Japan & East Asia — Where the technique was developed: buri and hiramasa on standard and speed jigging, and madai, kasago and hirame on slow-pitch rigs where assist length and stiffness are tuned deliberately.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Yellowtail kingfish and samson fish on Australian reefs; cobia, queenfish and GT in the Gulf; pollack, cod and coalfish on European wreck marks.

Specifications

Size Breaking Strength Length Construction Colour SKU
#100 100 lb 3 m PE braid with carbon core Blue 341FS458100
#120 120 lb 3 m PE braid with carbon core Blue 341FS458120

Recommended Pairing

  • 100 lb for light and slow-pitch jigs to around 150 g on PE 1–2 tackle
  • 120 lb for general vertical and slow-pitch work on PE 2–4
  • 150 lb for heavier jigs and locked-up drag settings on PE 4–6
  • Hang the finished assist on a solid ring rather than the split ring, so the cord never bears on a split-ring seam
  • Pair with assist hooks sized so the point sits clear of the jig body, plus assist thread and a rigging needle for the whip finish
