The Anglar Chinu Hook Pack 4177

Chinu is the Japanese name for black sea bream, and the chinu hook matches how that fish feeds: a small hard mouth that inspects a bait before committing. The answer is a short shank with a wide hooking gap and a point turned slightly in toward the shank, so the hook hides inside a prawn or crab bait, finds the corner of the jaw as the fish turns away, and does not lever back out. It has since become one of the most borrowed shapes in Asian bait fishing. The 4177 is a forged version with a turned-up ringed eye and a gold finish.

How To Rig It

• Float rig along walls and rock — Sliding float to a stopper, short trace, baited with prawn, crab or shellfish. Drift it down a breakwater or jetty face.
• Running sinker on the bottom — Egg sinker above a swivel, 60–100 cm leader. Do not strike early; let the rod load as the fish turns and the incurved point sets against the jaw.
• Pond rig (kolam pancing) — Snell the hook onto a short trace under a small float or light running lead, and fish paste, bread, pellet or prawn on the bottom.
• Baiting with prawn — Thread a peeled prawn from the tail up the shank so the point exits near the head. For a live prawn, pass the point through the horn on the head, in front of the dark spot behind the eyes.

• Southeast Asia — A jetty, seawall and pond staple. Yellowfin seabream (wong keok lap), croaker (gelama), small grouper (kerapu), snapper (merah) and mangrove jack from rock walls; in the paid ponds of Malaysia and Thailand, patin, tilapia, lampam jawa and jelawat on paste and pellet baits.
• North America — Sheepshead, black drum, porgy and tautog around bridge pilings and jetties, on shrimp and crab baits.
• Japan & East Asia — The original targets, kurodai and kibire (black and yellowfin sea bream), from breakwaters and rocky shores; also striped beakfish (ishidai) in the largest sizes.
• Australia, Middle East & Europe — Bream, whiting and luderick in Australian estuaries; safi in the Gulf; gilthead bream and wrasse on Mediterranean marks.

Specifications

Sizes follow the Japanese gō (号) system: the number rises as the hook gets larger, the reverse of Western numbering. #1 is the smallest here, #12 the largest.
