The Single27 Pluggin' Single is a replacement single hook designed specifically for plug-type hard baits — minnows, poppers, stickbaits and small crankbaits. Katsuichi's own reasoning: compared with a treble, the chance of a hooked fish coming off is greatly reduced, damage to the fish is lower, and the hook is safer to handle — for anglers who genuinely release what they catch, singles are the better tool. The pattern uses a vertical (in-line) eye so it hangs correctly under a plug, a wide eye that leaves room for a split ring without jamming, a round wide gape that finds a hold with most lure types, and a micro barb that leaves little trace and can be pinched down almost invisibly. Finished with tin plating and Aqua Block treatment for corrosion resistance. Supplied here in #6 and #8, eight per pack.

Converting a plug to singles is a real trade, not a free upgrade. You give up some hook-up rate — three points find a mouth more often than one. In exchange you get fewer snags on weed, rock and net, far fewer fouled hooks on the line during a cast, quicker unhooking, and a fish that goes back in one piece.

How To Rig It

• Watch the swimming action — A single is lighter than the treble it replaces, so a suspending plug can turn buoyant and a shallow runner can ride higher. Test each converted lure in clear water before fishing it, and go up a size or add a slightly heavier split ring if it has lost its posture.
• Point direction — Front hook facing forward, rear hook facing back is the usual arrangement on a minnow: it keeps the two from meeting each other and puts a point where the fish approaches. On a popper, run both points rearward.
• Match the size to the lure, not the fish — Choose the largest hook that still clears the belly of the plug without touching the body or the other hook. An oversized single fouls the lure and kills the wobble.
• Fight it differently — One point carries all the load, so keep steady pressure and a smooth drag rather than pumping. Lift into fish instead of striking hard.

• Southeast Asia — Hampala barb (sebarau), giant snakehead (toman), peacock bass and barramundi (siakap) on small minnows around timber and mangrove; small trevally and queenfish on casting plugs.
• North America — Trout and smallmouth bass on stream and lake minnows; speckled trout, redfish and school stripers inshore, especially at fisheries with single-hook or barbless rules.
• Japan & East Asia — Trout plugging in rivers and managed ponds, mebaru and small seabass on light plugs, and ajing-class plug work where single hooks are the norm.
• Australia, Middle East & Europe — Bream, bass and flathead on hard bodies in Australian estuaries; perch, chub and trout in European rivers and canals where barbless or single-hook rules apply.
