DUEL - EZ-Q SQUID HOOK 3.5" A1635/A1636/A1637 SQUID JIG SLOW JERK
DUEL EZ-Q 3.5" Squid Jig A1635 / A1636 / A1637
This is the original EZ-Q, the base model the rest of the family is built on, in the full 3.5 size with a heavy sinker for tip-run and boat eging. It combines three kinds of attraction: a curved shrimp profile with a large eye, DUEL's Wave Motion Body whose ribbed surface displaces water and throws subtle flash, and a weighted ladder-style sinker with a bumper that gets the jig down fast and protects it on the bottom. There is no rattle chamber and no weight-transfer system; what you get is the cleanest, most predictable version of the EZ-Q fall, which is why it stays the default when squid are feeding and nothing needs provoking. Three weights let you tune to depth, current and drift speed rather than changing rods.
Choosing a weight. 30g suits lighter current and shallower drifts, 35g is the general-purpose boat weight, 40g is for deeper water or a stronger run. Fish the lightest weight that keeps your line close to vertical; a jig streaming out behind the boat is out of the strike zone whatever the pattern.
Key Features
- Full 3.5-size egi for medium and larger squid
- Three weights — 30g, 35g, 40g — for depth, current and drift speed
- Wave Motion Body that displaces water and sharpens the shrimp-like presentation
- Tip-run compatible: a heavy configuration built for boat and vertical squid fishing
- Weighted ladder-style sinker with a bumper for fast, protected descent
- Glow-in-the-dark patterns in selected colours for low light and deeper water
How To Fish It
- Tip-run — Drop to the bottom, take up a turn or two, lift twice, then hold still and let the jig swing back as the boat drifts. The tip will either load down or unload suddenly; both mean a squid has it.
- Vertical lift and drop — At anchor, lift sharply two or three times to make the body wave and flash, then let the jig fall on a semi-slack line while counting. Nearly every take comes on that fall.
- Search the water column — Squid do not always sit on the bottom, especially under boat lights. Work the jig upward in stages, pausing at each level, until you find their depth.
- Charge the glow — Put a torch on the body for several seconds, then drop into the shadow at the edge of the boat's light pool, not the bright centre.
- Sweep, do not strike — A squid clamps the jig with its arms; a hard strike pulls it straight out of them. Sweep into the weight and wind under constant tension all the way up.
Target Species By Region
- Southeast Asia — Candat sotong night trips off Terengganu, Pahang and Johor for bigfin reef squid (sotong torak) and cuttlefish (sotong katak), dropped under the boat lights and worked back up.
- North America — Market squid on deeper harbour and nearshore marks along the California coast where lightweight shore egi cannot hold depth.
- Japan & East Asia — Tip-run boat eging for aoriika, 3.5 being the standard size for larger spring squid; also fished in Korea and Taiwan.
- Australia, Middle East & Europe — Southern calamari over deeper seagrass and reef edges in South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania; European squid and cuttlefish on Mediterranean boat drifts.
