The ez-FALL is built around one number: it sinks at roughly 5.5 seconds per metre. That is deliberately slow for a 10g jig, and slow fall is the whole tactic. Squid decide on a dropping lure, and the longer it stays in front of them the more chances they have to commit — which is why slow-sinking jigs earn their place in shallow water, over shallow reef and weed where a fast jig is on the bottom before it has been seen, and on heavily fished ground where squid have watched the same quick-falling jig all season. Duel fits it with Pata Pata Foot Light legs that catch the tide and set up a wave the body would not make on its own, and that drag also keeps a little tension in the line while it drifts, so a light take still registers at the rod tip instead of disappearing into slack.

How To Fish It

• Omorig — Run a sinker on the line and this jig on a longer leader behind it. Drop the sinker to depth, then let the ez-FALL swim down slowly behind it while the drift carries it away from the boat. Keep the rod almost still and read the line angle.
• Count the fall — At 5.5 seconds per metre you can count the jig to a depth instead of guessing. Ten seconds is about two metres. Once a squid takes, repeat the same count on the next drop.
• Where slow beats fast — Choose it in shallow bays, over weed and shallow reef, in slack tide, and on pressured ground late in the season. Switch back to a fast metal jig when the water is deep, the current is strong, or small fish keep intercepting the drop.
• Long pause, small movement — Move the jig only enough to make the legs open, then leave it. The fall does the work; extra rod action shortens the time the jig spends in front of the squid.
• Charge the glow — Hold luminous colours under a deck light or UV torch for 20–30 seconds before each drop.

• Southeast Asia — Bigfin reef squid (sotong torak) and cuttlefish (sotong katak) over shallow reef and around lit jetties in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia, where a slow fall keeps the jig clear of coral.
