The Anglar Wide Gap Hook Pack w/Ringed Eye NSB 4203

The gap is the open space between the point and the shank, and it is the only part of a hook that actually has to pass over a fish's jaw. Anything you put on the hook takes some of that space away. A fat live bait, a half prawn, the body of a soft plastic worm — each eats into the gap, and on a narrow pattern there can be almost nothing left to grip with. That is what the 4203 is built around: a wide-gap bend that still leaves usable clearance once the bait is on. The point is chemically sharpened to a needle and set kirbed-in, off the centreline, so it finds purchase when a fish comes at the bait from an angle. Forged through the bend, strong ringed eye, black nickel, twelve sizes from #14 up to #3/0.

Key Features

  • Wide-gap bend — keeps working clearance after a bulky bait or plastic body takes its share
  • Chemically sharpened needle point for penetration with little force
  • Kirbed-in (offset) point and reverse geometry for angled takes
  • Forged through the bend to resist opening — a wide gap puts more leverage on the point
  • Strong ringed eye for mono, fluorocarbon, braid or leader
  • Black-nickel (NSB) finish, dark and corrosion-resistant
  • Twelve sizes, #14 through #3/0, so one pattern covers panfish to inshore work

How To Rig It

  • Weedless soft plastic — Nose the point in, out through the belly, rotate and bury the tip just under the skin of the back. Do not let the plastic bunch on the shank; a bunched body closes the gap you paid for.
  • Live and whole bait — One pass through the nose or shoulder keeps the bait swimming and leaves the bend clear. Bulky baits are what this shape is for.
  • Bottom rig — Running sinker to a swivel, then 60–100 cm of leader tied to the ring. Let the rod load before lifting; the offset point needs contact, not a snatch.
  • Sizing — #14 to #6 for panfish, small bream and light freshwater bait rigs; #4 to #1 for general estuary and jetty work; #1/0 to #3/0 for large soft plastics and live bait.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Barramundi (siakap), mangrove jack and grouper (kerapu) on live bait at jetties and mangrove roots; snapper (ikan merah) on strip bait; tilapia, lampam and keli in the fine sizes.
  • North America — The standard wide-gape shape for largemouth bass on plastic worms; redfish, speckled trout and flounder on shrimp; bluegill and crappie in the small sizes.
  • Japan & East Asia — Worm-hook rigs for blackbass, and live-shrimp or live-bait presentations for seabass and rockfish (kasago, mebaru).
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Bream, flathead and estuary perch on prawn and plastics in Australia; hamour and sheri on Gulf bait rigs; perch, zander and pike on soft plastics in Europe.

Listed largest to smallest: #3/0 is the largest, #14 the smallest, and the range steps in even numbers below #4. Finish: black nickel throughout.

Wide gap elsewhere in the range. The 4211 is the wide-gap model in Anglar's prawn series, seven sizes from #7 to #1, packed in twenties. The 4203 is the general saltwater version of the same idea: a far longer size ladder, a bigger top end at #3/0, and a heavier ringed eye for leader.

Recommended Pairing

  • #14–#6: light bait rods, 4–12 lb line, small worm and prawn baits
  • #4–#1: general estuary and jetty rigs, 15–30 lb braid with a 20–40 lb fluorocarbon leader
  • #1/0–#3/0: 4–6 in soft plastics and live bait, 20–40 lb braid with a 30–60 lb leader
  • Match hook size to bait bulk — if the plastic covers the bend, step up rather than forcing it on
