The Anglar Sode Hook Flatted Bronze 4400 Fishing Hook

Sode (袖, "sleeve") is one of the standard Japanese freshwater shapes: a slim shank, a narrow gape and a straight point rather than an inturned one. Because the gape is narrow and the wire fine, the hook slips into a small mouth with very little resistance — which is why it converts the soft, tentative bites a wider hook misses. The 4400 is the plain workhorse of Anglar's Sode range: high-carbon wire, straight barbed point, flatted shank end, bronze finish, in fourteen sizes at twenty pieces per pack throughout. It is the standard-shank pattern of the three Sode hooks in this line, without the extra reach of the DX-406 or the forging and cut point of the DX-400 418.

Flatted vs ringed eye. Flatted means the shank end is simply pressed flat — there is no eye. Nothing sits above the shank, so the knot is compact, the finished rig is slim and the pull lines up straight with the point. It is made for fine line and snelled knots. A ringed eye trades that slimness for strength: it takes a heavy leader, a split ring or a snap. Both appear in this Anglar range — flatted here and on the 448 Akita, ringed on the 484 Plain Shank and the S-75M.

How To Rig It

• Snell, not a clinch knot — Run the line down the inside face of the shank, whip 6–8 turns toward the bend, then pass the tag back through the loop and tighten. A flatted hook has no eye to grip, so a standard knot will pull off the end.
• Prawn, worm and paste — Nick a live prawn once through the tail segment so it keeps kicking, or thread a worm on. For paste, press the bait around the bend and leave the point just proud.
• Light float or paternoster — Fish it under a small float just off bottom, or on a short dropper above a light running sinker. Lift into the fish as the line tightens rather than striking hard.
• Sizing — Japanese gō numbering: the number rises as the hook gets larger. #4–#8 for small pond and river fish, #9–#13 for general bait work, #14–#17 for larger baits.

• Southeast Asia — Prawn ponds (udang galah), tilapia, javanese carp (lampam), small catfish (keli); whiting, ponyfish and small bream on light jetty rigs.
• North America — Bluegill, crappie, yellow perch and other panfish on worm or maggot; small bullheads, and baitfish taken for the livewell.
• Japan & East Asia — The pattern's home fishery: funa (crucian carp), oikawa (pale chub), haze (goby) and tanago on fine float and bottom rigs.
• Australia, Middle East & Europe — Garfish, yellowfin bream and whiting from Australian jetties; small rabbitfish and bream on Gulf breakwaters; roach, rudd and perch on European canals and lakes.

Specifications

Finish: bronze throughout. Bronze is an economical plating suited to fresh water and short saltwater sessions — it will corrode if stored damp after salt use, so rinse and dry opened packets.

• 2–8 lb monofilament or fluorocarbon, snelled direct or to a fine dropper
