American Tackle Virtus Heavy Cast/Troll Guide 316SS 64DBRLVH Black Chrome Dura SW Ring

The Virtus Heavy sits a class above the A frame Ring Lock guides listed alongside it. Those shrug off lateral twist on casting and boat blanks; this one is designated a cast/troll guide — sustained drag pressure with the rod bent in a holder for hours, not the short violent load of a cast. Two things mark it out. The frame is 316 stainless, the marine grade of the alloy, in black chrome. The ring is a Dura SW, SW standing for saltwater ring, the specification American Tackle assigns to its salt-exposed builds. The size ladder says the same thing: 8 mm up to 40 mm, a larger top end than any A frame model, which stop at 30 mm. For the lighter end of the Virtus line, use the Virtus Lite 64DCRLVL; the two are meant to be chosen against each other rather than mixed on one blank.

How To Build With It

  • Troll layouts are not casting layouts — A troll rod needs guides placed to keep line off the blank under a long static bend, with a big first guide close to the reel. Space to the loaded curve, not the unloaded one.
  • Sizing the 40 mm — The 40 mm belongs at the stripper on overhead and stand-up builds where line leaves a large spool at a steep angle. On lighter rods a 30 or 25 mm stripper is enough.
  • Feet for heavy wraps — File both feet to a long thin taper, dry-fit and check for rocking, then wrap in size D or size A thread, burnishing hard before the epoxy goes on.
  • Salt discipline — 316 and an SW ring buy margin, not immunity. Rinse the whole train after every trip and dry the rod out of its tube.
