The Anglar Prawn Hook 4211

Prawn fishing means two things, and this hook sits across both. One is catching prawns — giant freshwater prawn (udang galah) and pond prawns on a float rig and a small natural bait. The other is mounting a prawn, a worm or a soft plastic as bait for fish. The 4211 is the wide-gap model in the Anglar prawn range, and that decides its job: the extra clearance between point and shank lets a bulky bait sit on the bend without masking the point. It is a carbon hook with a chemically sharpened offset point, a barb and a solid ringed eye, in black nickel.

Key Features

  • Wide-gap bend — what separates this model from the narrower 4204, 4205, 4206, 4207 and 4208 profiles
  • Extra point clearance so a bulky bait cannot block the hooking gap
  • Chemically sharpened offset point, with a barb that holds through strong runs
  • Solid ringed eye for a direct knot, a leader or a rigging system
  • Tournament-grade carbon with a black-nickel coating for corrosion resistance and low glare

How To Rig It

  • Live prawn, kept alive — Pass the point through the horn on top of the head, in front of the dark spot behind the eyes; that spot is the brain and hitting it kills the prawn. Rigged this way it swims a long time. To sit it lower, pass the hook side to side through the second segment from the tail.
  • Dead or peeled prawn — Thread the hook in at the tail and up the body so the bait lies straight along the shank, then bind it with bait elastic. A prawn threaded straight resists picking; one hung by a single pass gets stripped.
  • Soft plastic — Nose-hook a shrimp or paddle-tail imitation, or rig it weedless with the point buried in the body; the wide gap still leaves enough point for a hook-up.
  • Bottom rig — Egg sinker above a swivel, 60–100 cm leader to the ring eye. Let the rod load rather than striking early. Small sizes also fish a prawning float rig.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — A live-prawn hook for barramundi (siakap), mangrove jack, grouper (kerapu) and snapper (merah) around jetties, mangrove roots and rock walls; also udang galah and pond prawns in the smaller sizes.
  • North America — Shrimp under a popping cork for redfish, speckled trout and flounder; soft plastics for largemouth bass, where a wide gape is the standard worm-hook shape.
  • Japan & East Asia — Live-shrimp (ebi) rigs for seabass and rockfish; smaller sizes for tenaga-ebi prawn fishing on rivers and canals.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Live prawn for bream, flathead and mulloway in Australian estuaries; shrimp in the Gulf; soft-plastic work for perch and zander in Europe.
