The Anglar Prawn Hook 4207

Prawn fishing means two things: catching prawns — giant freshwater prawn (udang galah) and pond prawns, on a short rod with a float and a scrap of worm or prawn flesh — and threading a prawn on as bait for fish. The 4207 is made for the first, and it is one of the two barbless hooks in the Anglar prawn range — the only one of the pair with a ringed eye, since the barbless 4204 finishes in a spade end. That point decides how it fishes: nothing has to be torn back out, a prawn comes off in a second and goes into the keep-net undamaged, and undersized prawns are released cleanly.

Key Features

  • Barbless point — the defining feature, and the reason to pick it over the barbed 4205, 4206, 4208 and 4211
  • Penetrates with almost no resistance, since there is no barb to drive past
  • Unhooks instantly, with less damage to the prawn and less time out of the water
  • Suited to prawning ponds and venues that ask for barbless hooks
  • Deep curved bend and slim profile that sit neatly inside a small natural bait
  • Ringed eye for a direct knot; black-nickel finish, dark and corrosion-resistant

How To Rig It

  • Keep the line tight — The rule that matters with a barbless hook. Slack lets a prawn back off the point. Lift smoothly, hold steady pressure the whole way in, and do not pump the rod.
  • Float rig for prawns — Small float, one micro split shot, short fluorocarbon trace. Set the bait just off bottom so the prawn can lift it without feeling the lead.
  • Baiting — A short piece of worm or prawn flesh, threaded so the point stays clear. Bait slides more easily on a barbless hook, so use small pieces and re-bait often.
  • Prawn as bait — Pin a live prawn through the horn on top of the head, in front of the dark spot behind the eyes, so it keeps swimming. The barbless point does less damage, so the bait lives longer.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Giant freshwater prawn (udang galah) in Malaysian and Indonesian rivers, and the stocked prawning ponds of Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand (bo kung), where fast barbless unhooking keeps prawns in condition. Also fished on live prawn for barramundi (siakap) and mangrove jack at jetty pilings.
  • North America — No comparable prawn fishery; a barbless bait hook where regulations require one, for trout, panfish and catch-and-release stream fishing, and for live shrimp inshore.
  • Japan & East Asia — Tenaga-ebi (long-arm prawn) fishing on Japanese rivers and canals, which suits fine barbless hooks, and Taiwan's indoor prawning ponds.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Prawn baits for bream and flathead in Australian estuaries; shrimp in the Gulf; barbless-only coarse venues across Europe.

Recommended Pairing

  • Short 1.2–1.8 m prawn rod with a soft tip that keeps pressure on without pulling the hook
  • Small float, one or two micro split shot, 4–8 lb mono straight through
  • 1000–2500 spinning reel, light drag — barbless needs contact, not heavy pressure
  • Larger sizes on live prawn; smallest sizes for pond prawns and tenaga-ebi
