The Anglar 1930 O’Shaughnessy Ringed Hook 403 Nickel

The O’Shaughnessy is the default saltwater bait shape: long shank, deep round bend, straight point set in line with the eye. The long shank carries a long natural bait so it lies straight instead of spinning in the current, keeps teeth away from the knot, and gives pliers something to grip at the boat. The 403 carries the maker’s 1930N pattern designation, and it stretches that shape further than anything else in the range: twenty-three sizes, #18 up to #10/0. At the bottom end that is a genuinely small hook for jetty and freshwater bait work; at the top it takes a whole fish. High-carbon steel, forged through bend and shank, chemically sharpened straight point, barb, and a large ringed eye sized for thick mono, heavy fluorocarbon and the bulky knots that go with them. The nickel coating is bright silver with corrosion resistance — the opposite choice to the low-glare black 4002.

Key Features

  • Classic O’Shaughnessy profile — long shank, deep round bend, straight inline point
  • High-carbon steel: harder than stainless, so the point bites into hard jaw plates and holds its edge
  • Forged bend and shank, reinforced to resist opening under pressure from large fish
  • Chemically sharpened barbed point for direct penetration and a hold through runs and head shakes
  • Large ringed eye that accepts thick line, heavy leader and big knots without stress at the connection
  • Nickel coating for corrosion resistance and a bright silver finish
  • Twenty-three sizes, #18 through #10/0 — the widest span in the Anglar O’Shaughnessy family

How To Rig It

  • Long cut bait — Lay a fillet or belly strip along the shank and thread it on twice so it sits straight; a straight bait spins less and does not twist the leader.
  • Squid strip — Pass the point through the tube twice from the tip; the long shank stops soft squid sliding down and balling over the bend.
  • Paternoster (apollo) rig — Two droppers above a sinker for reef, wreck and bridge bottom fishing. Wind down onto the fish and lift; do not strike upward on a slack line.
  • Running sinker or snell — Sinker sliding to a swivel and a long leader for wary fish on sand; or snell the ring eye for trolled and drifted whole baits, which the oversized eye takes in heavy mono without crushing.
  • Small sizes — #18 to #8 fish the same shape on light jetty, estuary and freshwater rigs, where a long shank makes unhooking spiny fish safer.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Grouper (kerapu), red snapper (ikan merah) and golden snapper (jenahak) over reef and wreck; barramundi (siakap) at river mouths; catfish (duri) and croaker (gelama) on estuary mud in the mid sizes; tilapia, lampam and pond catfish (keli) in the smallest.
  • North America — Red and mangrove snapper, grouper, striped bass and bluefish on cut bait; channel, blue and flathead catfish in big rivers; the /0 sizes for shark, tarpon and cobia baits.
  • Japan & East Asia — Bukkomi (ブッコミ) bottom baits from breakwaters for anago and kurodai, and heavier dozuki (胴突き) boat rigs for hata and madai.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Snapper, emperor, mulloway and shark on Australian bottom and beach rigs; hamour and sheri in the Gulf; cod, ling and conger over European wrecks.

Listed smallest to largest. Western numbering: #18 is the smallest, the number falls as the hook grows, and the /0 sizes are larger again up to #10/0. Material: high-carbon steel, nickel coating — rinse and dry after every salt trip, since high carbon rusts once the coating is scratched. It has one release advantage over stainless: a hook left in a fish will corrode away in time.

Where it sits in the Anglar O’Shaughnessy family.

Model Material Finish Sizes Picked for
403 (1930N) High carbon Nickel, bright #18–#10/0 (23) Widest span and the big ringed eye; the only one that goes truly small or truly large
4002 High carbon Black, low glare #2/0–#6/0 (4) Hard cutting point in the common heavy sizes, kept discreet
4004 Stainless Plain #2–#6/0 (7) Everyday no-rust bait hook for rigs left made up
4143SS Stainless Plain #4–#9/0 (12) Heavy stainless; the maker lists the 8/0 as 2X-strong wire

In short: high carbon (403, 4002) for the hardest point when hooks come home the same day, stainless (4004, 4143SS) when traces stay rigged for weeks — and the 403 when you want one pattern covering the whole size range with an eye big enough for heavy leader.

Recommended Pairing

  • #18–#6: light jetty, estuary and freshwater bait rigs, 6–15 lb line, strip and prawn baits
  • #5–#1/0: general bottom and jetty fishing, 15–30 lb line with a 20–40 lb leader
  • #2/0–#5/0: reef, wreck and estuary bottom fishing, 30–50 lb braid with a 40–80 lb leader
  • #6/0–#10/0: whole fish, squid and crab baits on heavy bottom or standup gear, 80–150 lb leader
  • Snell with heavy mono for trolled whole baits; add a wire trace where mackerel, barracuda or shark feed
