Yozuri Takoyan Octopus Jig — #3.0 31 g / #3.5 42 g, E1338 / E1339

The Takoyan (タコやん) is a tako-egi — an octopus jig, not a squid egi. Octopus crawl over the bottom and grab what passes in front of them, so the design is built to stay on the seabed. The buoyant shrimp-form body rides nose-up above a replaceable claw-shaped sinker, so the sinker takes the ground contact while the body stands clear of rock and weed. Rubber legs keep working while the jig sits still, and an internal resin rattle reproduces the click of a bolting shrimp. DUEL rates the design for roughly 2 to 10 metres of water.

Choosing a size. The 31 g #3.0 suits shore and shallow ground — breakwater walls and rock ledges in light current, where a heavier jig wedges between stones. The 42 g #3.5 holds bottom in running tide, deeper basins and boat drifts, and shows a larger silhouette.

How To Fish It

• Drag it, do not jerk it — Cast, let it reach bottom, then crawl it back in slow 20–30 cm pulls with the rod low, keeping ground contact throughout. Octopus ignore a lure swimming a metre above them.
• Stop and shake — Every few pulls, stop dead and shake the tip in place for several seconds without moving the jig forward. Most octopus commit here.
• Feel weight, then wait — A take feels like a snag, or like the jig suddenly got heavier. Do not strike. Give it a few seconds to pull the jig into its arms, then load the rod smoothly.
• Lift steadily, never give slack — Keep constant heavy pressure and wind without pumping. Once an octopus grips rock with its suckers you will not shift it: hold pressure, move along the wall to change the angle, and wait it out.
• Fish the edges — Rock-to-sand transitions, breakwater bases and mussel-covered pilings, best over a moving tide in warmer months.

Target Species By Region

• Southeast Asia — Octopus (gurita) over coral rubble, rock ledges and jetty foundations in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines. Take rules vary by state and marine park — check local regulations.
• North America — Octopus along the rocky Pacific coast and around Gulf and Florida hardbottom. Some jurisdictions restrict or prohibit taking octopus — confirm the local rules first.
• Japan & East Asia — Madako is the main target: shore "octopussing" from breakwaters and boat tako-egi work in Tokyo Bay, Osaka Bay and the Akashi Strait, with iidako in cooler months. Many ports and prefectures restrict octopus fishing — observe the posted rules.
• Australia, Middle East & Europe — Gloomy and common octopus off Australian rock walls, common octopus (pulpo, polpo) from Mediterranean and Atlantic rock, and rocky-shore octopus on Gulf coasts. Size limits, closed seasons and bans apply in several of these fisheries — follow local regulations.
