Santec Squid Sutte Sabiki Rigs 2 Branch / 3 Branch

This is a squid rig, not a baitfish rig. Despite the sabiki name it is built around the sutte (スッテ), the Japanese squid lure whose crown of fine barbless spines catches in a squid's arms rather than hooking a mouth. The Santec rig is a pre-tied multi-branch leader carrying several sutte at set intervals along one clear trace, so you fish two or three depths at once and find the layer the squid are holding in. A T-shaped connector at each branch stands the lure leader off the main line, luminous beads at the joints glow after a light charge, and an integrated stainless steel spring acts as a shock absorber, flexing on a sudden pull instead of passing it to the knots or tearing a squid's soft tentacles. A sinker below holds the string vertical.

How To Fish It

• Candat sotong / boat squid fishing — Anchor or drift over sand and weed edges after dark, hang a sinker below, drop until the lead touches, then wind up a metre. This is a lowering game, not a casting one.
• Lift and drop, slowly — Raise the rod tip about half a metre over one to two seconds, then lower it under control so the sutte flutter down. Squid come on the fall. A fast jerk pulls the lure past them.
• Squid hug, they do not bite — There is no strike, only sudden weight or a soft loading of the tip. Do not set the hook. Wind smoothly and keep constant pressure — the spines hold only while the line stays tight, and one slack moment loses the squid. Net it rather than lifting it clear on the leader.
• Work the light — Under boat lights or a lit jetty, drop just outside the bright ring where squid sit in shadow watching the baitfish. Charge the beads with a torch before each drop.

• Southeast Asia — Sotong (squid) and cuttlefish on night candat sotong trips off Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia, from anchored boats and lit jetties.
• North America — Market squid off California piers and boats; longfin squid on North Atlantic runs.
• Japan & East Asia — Ika-tsuri for surume-ika and yari-ika; multi-sutte strings are the standard boat method, alongside single-jig eging from shore.
• Australia, Middle East & Europe — Southern calamari off Australian jetties and weed beds; squid and cuttlefish from Gulf and Mediterranean harbour walls at night.

Specifications

Sabiki Rig models are complete pre-tied rigs, two per pack. Dropper models are replaceable-dropper full sets for rebuilding a rig branch by branch.

Recommended Pairing

• Soft-tipped squid or light boat rod, 6–7 ft, so the tip absorbs the lunge
• 2500–3000 spinning reel with a smoothly set drag; PE 0.8–1.5 braid or 10–15 lb monofilament
• Sutte jigs to suit the branch snaps, and a sinker matched to depth and current
