The Santec 7917 is a rolling pole swivel in a black nickel finish, supplied in four sizes from #4 through to #1/0. A rolling swivel is the everyday workhorse of the terminal box: it turns freely enough to shed the twist that bait fishing and drifting generate, at a fraction of the cost of a ball-bearing swivel. What makes the pole version different is the long straight shank running out from the body. That pole holds a sliding float, a bead stack or a dropper away from the barrel, so the rig stands off the main line instead of collapsing onto it — the usual cure for a hooklength that keeps wrapping on the cast. The black nickel finish keeps flash down in clear inshore water.

How To Use And How To Choose

• Sliding float rigs — Run the main line through the float, then tie the pole swivel below it. The float rides on the pole rather than jamming against the knot, and the leader hangs straight below.
• Surf and boat bottom rigs — Use the pole as the stand-off for a hooklength on a running ledger, so the trace cannot fold back and tangle in the tide.
• Knots — Palomar to the top eye on braid, improved clinch or uni to the leader below. Wet the knot before drawing it down on the small sizes.
• Rolling or crane? — Stay with a rolling swivel for bait, float and general casting work. Step up to a crane or ball-bearing swivel when a spinning blade, a rotating trolled lure or a heavy drifted bait is putting constant twist into the line.
• Sizing — #4 and #2 for light float and estuary rigs, #1 and #1/0 for surf and boat work. Undersizing puts the failure at the swivel; oversizing sinks a delicate float rig.
