Hinotsu SH-2 Sode Hook NSB Ringed 4762

The Sode pattern is built around one idea: a fish with a small mouth and a soft bite should feel as little metal as possible. A slim shank, a narrow gape and a straight point mean the hook slides in on a half-hearted take instead of being pushed aside. The SH-2 4762 is Hinotsu's ringed version — long shank, compact bend, forged body, hand-ground barbed point, and an inline point that lines up with the eye so the pull runs straight at the hook point. The black-nickel (NSB) finish makes it usable in salt as well as fresh water, which is unusual for a Sode hook. Ten sizes, #6 to #15, fifteen pieces per pack.

Key Features

  • Sode profile with a long shank — neat presentation for threaded worm, prawn or fish strip
  • Ringed (closed) eye for a direct knot to line, leader or a snelled trace
  • Inline point aligned with the eye for a straight pulling angle on the hook-set
  • Forged body to resist bending and deformation under pressure
  • Hand-ground barbed point, described by the manufacturer as hand finished for sharpness
  • Black-nickel (NSB) finish for corrosion resistance in fresh and salt water
  • Ten sizes, #6 to #15, fifteen pieces per pack

Ringed versus flatted — the one real difference in this pair. The SH-2 and the flatted 4797 share the same Sode geometry; what separates them is the shank end. A ringed eye is a closed loop, so it takes any ordinary knot — uni, Palomar or a snelled loop — and it will hold a heavier leader, typically 6–20 lb, plus a swivel or small snap for quick hook changes. That strength is why this is the model for brackish and coastal water, or wherever the fish may be a size bigger than expected. A flatted hook has no eye at all: the pressed end must be snelled, which keeps the rig slim on fine line but will not tolerate a thick leader. The spans differ too — the ringed 4762 covers #6 to #15, the flatted 4797 stretches from #4 out to #17.

How To Rig It

  • Knot direct to the ring — A uni or Palomar knot to fluorocarbon is enough. Wet the knot before seating it; fine wire hooks are unforgiving of a knot burned on the ring.
  • Threaded bait on the long shank — Enter at the tail of a worm or peeled prawn and thread it up the shank so it lies straight. A straight bait spins less and holds better in current.
  • Two-hook estuary paternoster — Snell two of these onto short droppers above a sinker for jetty and river-mouth work; the ringed eye lets you swap droppers without retying the rig.
  • Float and free-line — Under a light float with one or two split shot, or free-lined with no weight at all in shallow water. Lean into the fish as the line comes tight rather than striking.
  • Sizing — Japanese gō numbering, so the number rises with the hook. #6–#9 for small mouths and light bait, #10–#12 for general work, #13–#15 for larger prawn and strip baits.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Tilapia, lampam and catfish (keli) in ponds and rivers; ponyfish, croaker (gelama), small bream and whiting from jetties and river mouths on prawn or fish strip.
  • North America — Panfish and yellow perch in fresh water; pinfish, croaker, whiting and small spot on shrimp from piers and surf.
  • Japan & East Asia — Haze (goby), funa and oikawa in fresh water, plus aji, mebaru and small seabream on light shore bait rigs.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Whiting, garfish and yellowfin bream from Australian jetties; small rabbitfish (safi) on Gulf breakwaters; roach, rudd and small mullet in Europe.

Recommended Pairing

  • Light bait, float or estuary rod with a 1000–2500 spinning reel
  • 4–12 lb monofilament, or braid with a 6–20 lb fluorocarbon leader knotted direct to the ring
  • Small running sinkers and light droppers; keep terminal weight low so the fine wire is not overloaded
  • Choose the flatted 4797 where you want the slimmest possible snelled rig on very fine line
