Yozuri Altima TJ Spoon F249 — 10 g Metal Spoon

The Altima TJ Spoon is a 10 g metal spoon-type lure from Yo-Zuri, supplied in two colour codes. A spoon is the oldest lure design still in daily use, and it survives because a shaped, polished piece of metal will flash and wobble at almost any retrieve speed, in almost any water colour, with nothing to tune and nothing to break. At 10 g it is a genuine all-rounder: dense enough to cast a long way on light or medium-light tackle and to hold its line in current, but light enough to be worked slowly over shallow reservoir arms, river seams and rock ledges without dragging bottom. It is the size most Malaysian anglers already own for sebarau, and it does the same job in fresh, brackish and coastal water.

How To Fish It

• Cast and steady wind — Cast, keep the rod tip low and wind at a constant medium pace so the spoon holds a rhythmic wobble you can feel through the blank. If it feels dead, wind slightly faster; if it starts spinning and twisting the line, slow down.
• Count down to find the layer — After the cast, count in seconds while the spoon sinks before you start winding. Add five seconds each cast until you find the depth holding fish, then repeat that count exactly.
• Lift and drop — Over deeper structure, sweep the rod to about ten o'clock, then drop the tip and follow the spoon down on a semi-slack line. Takes register as a tick or as line going slack, so watch the line rather than waiting to feel weight.
• Swing it through current — At a reservoir inflow, river mouth or tidal channel, cast up and across and let the flow swing the spoon around broadside on a semi-tight line. Fish sitting on the seam usually hit at the end of the swing.
• Vertical from a boat — Drop to the bottom, lift a metre, and let the spoon flutter back on a controlled line, over timber and drop-offs where casting is awkward.

• Southeast Asia — Hampala barb (sebarau) at reservoir inflows and rapids, where a swung spoon is a long-standing local method; also giant snakehead (toman), peacock bass, jungle perch, and queenfish (talang) and small trevally from jetties and rock walls.
• North America — Trout, salmon, pike, walleye and smallmouth bass in lakes and rivers; schoolie striped bass and bluefish from beaches and jetties.
• Japan & East Asia — Trout in mountain streams and managed ponds, plus rockfish (mebaru, kasago) and small seabass from breakwaters on light shore tackle.
• Australia, Middle East & Europe — Australian bass and saratoga in impoundments, bream and flathead in estuaries; pike, perch, zander and sea trout in European rivers and coasts; small queenfish and trevally along Gulf shorelines.

Available colour codes: G166 and M155. As a general rule with metal spoons, run the brighter, more reflective finish in clear water and bright sun, and the darker or warmer finish in stained water, overcast light and at dawn and dusk.
