Decoy Y-S81 Treble Hook — Made In Japan
The Y-S81 is the power end of Decoy’s treble range: a saltwater plugging hook built around a straight point and a slightly heavier wire than the company’s general-purpose patterns. The point runs on a long taper into a Limerick bend, which is a shape that drives rather than skids — useful when you are hooking fish deliberately on a short twitch or a popping cadence instead of waiting for them to hook themselves. Behind it sits a long throat and a barb set at a low angle, so once the point is in there is very little to lever it back out. Decoy balance the extra wire carefully: it is heavier, but the geometry means it still sets with light force rather than needing a full-body strike. Solid System welding holds the three legs, the Smart Eye takes a split ring without a fight, the eye is vertical for correct hang on any plug, and tin plating with Aqua Block treatment covers the corrosion side.
Key Features
- Straight point on a long taper for fast, direct penetration
- Limerick bend and a secure gape shape for holding power under load
- Long throat with a low-angle barb to reduce hook-outs on a long fight
- Slightly heavier wire than Decoy’s standard trebles, aimed at saltwater plugging
- Smart Eye for easier split-ring fitting and less hand fatigue on a full lure box
- Solid System welded construction; vertical (tate) eye
- Tin plating with Aqua Block treatment for saltwater corrosion resistance
- Stocked in #1, #2, #6 and #8; Decoy produce the pattern from #8 to #1/0
How To Rig It
- Short twitching and popping — This hook is built for anglers who set the hook themselves. Work the lure in short, repeated strokes, and when the fish commits, sweep the rod firmly. The straight point and long taper do the rest.
- Rebuilding a saltwater plug — Replace both trebles rather than one. Matching hooks keep the lure tracking straight; a heavier hook on one hanger alone will pull a plug off its swimming line.
- Choosing between the Decoy trebles — Y-F33B is the fine-wire micro hook for small plugs and light bites; Y-S21 uses a curved point and short shank to survive shallow rock and structure; Y-S81 is the heavy-wire straight-point hook for open saltwater plugging and hard hook-sets on bigger fish.
- Allow for the added weight — Heavier wire slows a floating lure’s rise and can make a shallow plug sit lower. Test the lure in front of you before fishing it, and drop a size if the action flattens.
Target Species By Region
- Southeast Asia — Giant trevally, queenfish and Spanish mackerel on casting plugs and poppers; barramundi (siakap) and mangrove jack in the bigger sizes around river mouths and rock walls.
- North America — Striped bass, bluefish and false albacore on inshore plugs; redfish and snook on the smaller sizes.
- Japan & East Asia — Large seabass (suzuki), hiramasa and shore-jigging or plugging targets on rocky coasts, the fishery Decoy designed the pattern for.
- Australia, Middle East & Europe — Barramundi, mackerel and queenfish on northern Australian and Gulf coasts; bass and pollack on European rock marks and over shallow reef.

Recommended Pairing
- #8 and #6 for small to mid-size saltwater minnows and pencils, 10–20 lb class
- #2 and #1 for casting plugs, poppers and stickbaits, PE 1.5–3 braid with a 30–60 lb leader
- Medium-heavy to heavy plugging or shore-casting rod with enough backbone to drive a heavier-wire point
- Match split rings and lure hangers to the hook — there is no point fitting a strong treble to an undersized ring
